About the role
Project Manager - National Grid Substation Projects
Location: UK - project / site based
Sector: Electricity Transmission | HV Substations
The opportunity
JAM Talent is partnering with a leading UK civil engineering contractor, part of a major international construction group, to appoint a Project Manager to lead delivery of National Grid transmission and substation projects.
This is a senior leadership role with full accountability for delivering a nationally significant electricity infrastructure project. You'll be responsible for safety, programme, commercial performance, quality, the client relationship and the final handover. If you've led major energy or infrastructure schemes and want to work at the centre of the UK's grid upgrade, this is a role worth talking about.
What you'll be doing
- Leading an integrated, multidisciplinary project team from construction through commissioning, energisation, handover and close-out
- Acting as the main delivery interface with National Grid, designers, commissioning teams, stakeholders and the supply chain
- Taking overall responsibility for SHEQ performance, CDM compliance and safe systems of work, including permits, outages, temporary works, lifting and energisation readiness
- Owning the baseline and integrated programme, managing the critical path, interfaces and long-lead items, and driving recovery plans when needed
- Owning the project P&L, including forecasting, cash, risk allowances, change and final account strategy
- Running NEC3/NEC4 contracts: early warnings, compensation events and programme submissions
- Making sure the design is coordinated, buildable and assured, with construction right first time and NCRs and defects closed out promptly
- Giving accurate, candid reports to the client and to internal governance
What you'll bring
- A degree or equivalent in engineering, construction management or a related discipline
- Extensive Project Manager or senior project leadership experience on major infrastructure or energy schemes
- A proven track record of accountability for safety, programme, commercial results and multidisciplinary teams
- Strong NEC3/NEC4 contract and programme management skills
- SMSTS, plus a CSCS or EUSR CSCS management card
- A full UK driving licence
Highly desirable
- Experience leading live HV substation or transmission projects
- EUSR SHEA Power, BESC:AME Substations or National Grid site authorisation (or the ability to obtain them)
- APM PMQ/PPQ, ChPP, CEng, MICE or MCIOB
- NEC4 Project Manager accreditation
- NEBOSH Construction Certificate or IOSH Managing Safely
- Experience of outage-led programmes, commissioning governance and civil/electrical EPC interfaces
Why apply?
- Lead high-profile National Grid projects that are central to the UK's energy transition
- Join a well-established contractor backed by a major international group
- Get real ownership, visible leadership and a clear route to senior project and contracts roles
- Receive a competitive package with car or allowance, pension and benefits
