About the role
Client
Our client is a well-established, internationally recognised engineering, design and construction organisation with a long-standing reputation for delivering technically complex and high-specification projects.
Offering an integrated range of consultancy, engineering, design and construction management services, the business works across a diverse range of sectors, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, laboratories, advanced manufacturing, food production, logistics and commercial developments.
With extensive in-house engineering expertise, the company provides a comprehensive service from initial feasibility and concept design through to construction, commissioning and project completion. Its multidisciplinary approach enables close collaboration between engineering disciplines, providing clients with coordinated, practical and innovative solutions.
Role
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Electrical Design Engineer to join the company’s Watford-based engineering team.
The successful candidate will play a key role in the design and delivery of electrical building services systems across a varied portfolio of technically demanding projects, with a particular emphasis on pharmaceutical, research and specialist industrial facilities.
Working within a multidisciplinary engineering environment, you will be responsible for developing electrical designs from initial concept through to detailed design, while providing technical support during procurement, construction and commissioning.
The position offers considerable technical autonomy, direct client engagement and opportunities to mentor junior engineers, alongside exposure to specialist engineering systems and complex project requirements.
Responsibilities
- Undertake the design and coordination of electrical building services systems from initial concept through to detailed design and construction.
- Design HV/LV electrical distribution, small power, data infrastructure, general and emergency lighting, fire detection and alarm systems, security systems, cable containment, lightning protection and surge protection.
- Carry out electrical engineering calculations, including load assessments, cable sizing, protective device selection, lighting calculations and lightning protection risk assessments.
- Prepare technical specifications, engineering reports, equipment schedules, design drawings and associated documentation.
- Coordinate electrical designs with architectural, structural, mechanical, public health, process engineering and controls disciplines.
- Attend client meetings, design workshops, site surveys and project coordination meetings to establish requirements and resolve technical issues.
- Oversee the preparation of drawings and layouts by CAD support staff.
- Assist with the preparation of cost estimates, procurement packages, tender assessments and technical evaluations.
- Review contractor submissions, manufacturing drawings, installation details and equipment selections to ensure compliance with project specifications.
- Provide technical support during construction, including site inspections, quality reviews, commissioning activities and project handover.
- Monitor design progress, engineering hours and project deliverables to ensure work is completed within agreed programmes and resource allocations.
- Mentor and support intermediate and junior engineers, promoting technical development and engineering best practice.
- Contribute to the development of safe, reliable, sustainable and cost-effective electrical engineering solutions.
- Support client presentations and business development activities where appropriate.
Requirements
- Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Approximately five to seven years’ experience in electrical building services design, ideally gained within an engineering consultancy environment.
- Strong technical knowledge of electrical distribution systems, lighting, small power, fire alarms, security systems and associated building services infrastructure.
- Experience undertaking electrical design calculations using industry-standard engineering software.
- Proven ability to deliver electrical designs through concept, preliminary and detailed design stages.
- Good working knowledge of relevant UK legislation, regulations and technical standards, including BS 7671, BS 5266, BS 5839, Building Regulations and CDM Regulations 2015.
- Experience coordinating electrical services with other engineering and construction disciplines.
- Ability to manage individual design responsibilities with minimal supervision while maintaining programme and quality requirements.
- Strong communication skills and confidence engaging directly with clients, contractors and project stakeholders.
- Experience reviewing technical submissions, installation drawings and contractor proposals.
- An understanding of electrical systems within pharmaceutical, research, laboratory or specialist industrial facilities would be advantageous.
- Chartered Engineer status, or a commitment to achieving chartership through a recognised professional institution such as the IET or CIBSE, would be desirable.
Benefits
This position would suit an ambitious Senior Electrical Engineer looking to take greater ownership of technically challenging projects while developing their expertise within a multidisciplinary engineering organisation.
The role offers exposure to specialist electrical installations, complex engineering requirements and projects within highly regulated industries, providing opportunities to broaden technical knowledge beyond conventional commercial building services.
With a strong emphasis on engineering excellence, collaboration and professional development, the company offers an environment in which experienced engineers can strengthen their technical leadership capabilities, build lasting client relationships and progress towards more senior engineering positions.
