Fresh People are recruiting for a Payroll Supervisor to join a growing professional services firm based in Canterbury. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Payroll Senior or Payroll Supervisor who enjoys the technical aspects of payroll, working with a varied client portfolio and supporting the development of colleagues.
Working as part of an established payroll department, you will play an important role in ensuring the accurate, compliant and timely delivery of payroll services while providing technical guidance, reviewing payroll work and maintaining strong client relationships.
The Role
As Payroll Supervisor, you will support the day-to-day operation of the payroll department, working closely with management and the wider team to maintain high standards of accuracy, compliance and client service.
Key responsibilities include:
- Reviewing payroll processing to ensure accuracy, compliance and delivery within agreed deadlines.
- Overseeing complex payroll calculations, adjustments and payroll queries.
- Supporting the management of multiple client payrolls and ensuring an efficient payroll service.
- Reviewing and authorising payroll work, carrying out quality checks and monitoring workflow controls.
- Ensuring compliance with HMRC requirements, payroll legislation, workplace pensions and automatic enrolment.
- Overseeing BACS payment processes, ensuring payments are correctly authorised and submitted on time.
- Supporting the onboarding and implementation of new payroll clients.
- Providing technical payroll guidance and resolving complex client queries.
- Reviewing the work of Payroll Analysts and junior colleagues, providing coaching, support and constructive feedback.
- Assisting with workload planning, departmental procedures and process improvements.
- Maintaining accurate payroll records and ensuring compliance with GDPR and data protection requirements.
About You
We are looking for a technically capable payroll professional who can combine strong payroll knowledge with excellent organisation, attention to detail and a professional approach to client service.
You will ideally offer:
- Proven experience in payroll processing with a strong understanding of UK payroll legislation and HMRC requirements.
- Experience managing or supporting multiple payrolls, ideally within an accountancy practice, payroll bureau or professional services environment.
- Confidence reviewing payroll calculations, identifying discrepancies and resolving complex payroll queries.
- Good knowledge of workplace pensions, automatic enrolment and associated compliance requirements.
- Experience using payroll software and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills and the confidence to liaise directly with clients.
- Experience supporting, mentoring or reviewing the work of junior payroll colleagues.
- A proactive, collaborative approach with a commitment to accuracy and delivering high standards of service.
A CIPP qualification, or working towards a recognised payroll qualification, would be advantageous, although relevant practical experience is equally valued.
The Opportunity
This position offers the opportunity to join an established accountancy and advisory firm with a strong reputation for delivering professional services to a diverse client base.
You will benefit from:
- A varied and technically interesting payroll role.
- Exposure to a broad portfolio of clients and payroll requirements.
- The opportunity to develop your supervisory and technical payroll expertise.
- Working alongside experienced payroll and accountancy professionals.
- A supportive and collaborative team environment.
