About the role
Job Description
Senior Practitioner - AMHP - Ref: SS05826
Grade: G10; Salary range: £48,738 - £51,928 (plus 10% unsociable hours payment)
Walsall Council's Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) Team is seeking a dedicated and experienced AMHP Senior Practitioner to join our established 24/7 AMHP Hub. This role involves working a shift pattern that includes day and night shifts, weekends, and bank holidays.
Our AMHP Hub currently consists of six full-time AMHPs who provide a 24-hour service through a dedicated rota, supported by community-based AMHPs working during office hours. This additional post reflects our commitment to strengthening the team and ensuring the continued delivery of high-quality services.
You will play a key role in delivering a responsive, person-centred service. At Walsall, we have adopted a full consideration approach to every referral received under Section 13 of the Mental Health Act. We are committed to ensuring that each referral is approached thoughtfully & proportionately. You will support the day-to-day running of the service, contribute to service development alongside the AMHP Lead, and provide supervision and support to a small number of AMHPs and AMHP trainees.
We are looking for a qualified AMHP who is confident in their practice and comfortable working in a person-centred, strengths-based, and solution-focused way. You will be professionally curious, passionate about promoting people's rights, and committed to taking the time needed to fully understand each person's situation before making decisions. You will have the ability to critique the information gained.
The role offers a high degree of professional autonomy. You will be responsible for managing referrals, considerations and, where appropriate, coordinating and undertaking assessments with Doctor(s). You will be expected to apply a strong working knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Mental Health Act, the Human Rights Act, associated case law, and the Mental Health Act Code of Practice.
Strong communication and listening skills are essential, as is the ability to work collaboratively with individuals, families, carers, and partner agencies.
If you are passionate about excellent AMHP practice, committed to safeguarding individual rights, and looking for an opportunity to help shape and develop an innovative and supportive service, we would welcome your application.
Along with this, you will need:
Hold a professional qualification such as Social Worker, Psychiatric Nurse, Occupational Therapist or Psychologist.
Hold the Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) qualification.
Evidence of approval with a Local Authority.
If you would like an informal discussion about this post, please contact the AMHP Lead: [email removed]
Closing Date: Thursday 26 November 2026.
