What is a Newly Qualified Nanny?
A Newly Qualified Nanny (NQN) has completed three full-time years of intensive early years training at Norland. They will have successfully completed our BA (Hons) in Early Years Development and Learning degree and the first three years of our diploma, including practical placement experience in a wide range of settings.
An NQN will now undertake their first full-time probationary nanny position employed by a family. The aim of which is to enable the NQN to gain confidence and experience as a full-time nanny whilst being supported by Norland and their employer.
The successful completion of the one-year NQN post is the final module of the Norland Diploma qualification, ensuring that qualified Norland Nannies are practitioners with both high level academic qualifications and extensive practical experience. All our NQNs are qualified to work independently with children but have not yet achieved their Norland Diploma, which earns them the right to refer to themselves as a Norland Nanny or Norlander.
NQNs are paid a ‘newly qualified salary’ for a one-year fixed-term contract and will be expected to undertake all of the duties of a fully qualified Norland Nanny. Families will pay a reduced fixed Agency fee – 10% of the NQN’s gross annual salary plus VAT.
Register your vacancyImportant information if you are interested in employing an NQN
We are delighted you are interested in employing an NQN. Please take your time to consider whether this would be a suitable childcare option for your family’s needs and note the following important information:
- NQNs become available for interviews each year from the beginning of July until they are all successfully placed in an NQN role. Due to the high demand for NQNs, we are unable to guarantee that all registered families will be sent an NQN CV or will hire an NQN.
- Families must require an NQN for at least one child who is not attending either full-time nursery or school and have a minimum of 30 hours child contact time each week. This must be for the entirety of the NQN contract. This allows the NQN to have experience of documenting and planning for the child’s learning as part of the NQN module assessment.
- There is a minimum requirement for NQNs to work at least 45 hours each week and no less than four days per week. Daily NQNs (live-out) may work a maximum of 50 hours per week, and residential NQNs (live-in) a maximum of 60 hours per week. Occasional additional hours may be negotiated directly with the NQN outside of the contracted hours and paid in accordance with the contracted overtime rate. NQNs may not be contracted to 24-hour care.
- NQNs must have two consecutive days off each week. This is usually a weekend but can be flexible depending on your family requirements.
- NQNs may be employed to work in sole charge or shared care positions or a mixture of the two. NQNs are unable to work in nanny share positions, within a nanny team or in rota positions.
- If residential, the NQN is required to have their own private bedroom and either a private bathroom or a shared bathroom with the child.
- NQNs are unable to take positions outside of England and Wales.
- NQNs may travel abroad with the family for short periods of time. The employer will be required to inform the NQN team when they are taking the NQN out of the country and must seek permission to take them abroad for a period over two weeks.
- For fairness-of-assessment purposes, holiday entitlement for NQNs must be between 28-33 days (including bank holidays).
- There is a requirement for employers to complete three formal appraisals at four, eight and 12 months with the NQN (templates will be provided). In addition to the appraisals the NQN team will request feedback from the employer throughout the year, checking the progress of the NQN.
- Employers will need to allow an NQN Consultant to visit the NQN at least once during their NQN year within the family home, as well as allowing the NQN to share elements of their nanny documentation with the NQN team by email throughout the year. Norland requires NQNs to complete compulsory documentation including a nanny diary, weekly activity plan, weekly menu plan and documentation of learning and interest.
- A dedicated NQN team at Norland will support both the NQNs and the families throughout the contract.
On behalf of our family, I extend my thanks to the entire NQN team for their trust and support in the past two years. Our experience has exceeded any expectation we could have had and has brought us so much joy and enrichment to our daughter, and our family’s lives.Newly Qualifed Nanny (NQN) employer

We love that she is always very level-headed with the boys – able to balance positive energy with calm reassurance (and setting boundaries where appropriate). We also really appreciate how easy and charming she is to have around the house. She makes us feel totally at ease and is always proactive and helpful.
