This is an excellent opportunity for a technically skilled engineer with a strong background in commercial plumbing, heating and mechanical maintenance to work within a critical healthcare environment. You will be responsible for maintaining essential building services, ensuring equipment operates safely and efficiently, and supporting the delivery of a reliable, compliant engineering service.
Working as part of a wider estates team, you will undertake planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive repairs and fault-finding activities across a range of mechanical and water systems, helping to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for patients, staff and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance and reactive repairs across domestic hot and cold water systems, low-temperature hot water (LTHW), chilled water and ventilation systems.
- Maintain and repair mechanical plant and equipment, including pumps, calorifiers, heat exchangers, valves, booster sets, water tanks and associated components.
- Undertake fault-finding, diagnostics and repairs across commercial plumbing, heating and associated mechanical systems.
- Support the maintenance of piped medical gas and compressed air systems, working within the limits of your competence and authorisation.
- Monitor system performance and identify opportunities to improve reliability, efficiency and overall service delivery.
- Work alongside specialist contractors, colleagues and the wider estates team to ensure maintenance activities are completed effectively.
- Accurately record maintenance activities, technical information and compliance documentation using digital maintenance systems.
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with relevant health and safety legislation, safe working procedures and healthcare engineering standards.
- Support statutory compliance, risk management and a right-first-time approach to maintenance.
- Respond to faults and breakdowns promptly, minimising disruption to essential hospital services.
Essential Requirements
- A recognised Level 3 qualification in Plumbing and Heating, ideally supported by a completed apprenticeship or equivalent commercial plumbing and heating qualification.
- Proven experience in commercial plumbing, heating and mechanical building services maintenance.
- Strong practical knowledge of domestic hot and cold water systems, heating systems and associated mechanical plant.
- Experience carrying out planned maintenance, reactive repairs, fault-finding and component replacement.
- A good understanding of health and safety legislation, risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Knowledge of healthcare engineering environments and relevant Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs) would be advantageous.
- The ability to work independently, prioritise tasks and respond effectively to operational issues.
- Good communication skills and a professional approach when working alongside colleagues, contractors and hospital stakeholders.
- Flexibility to work the rotating day and night shift pattern.
Whats on Offer?
- Salary of £40,000-£43,000 per annum.
- Rotating shift pattern offering regular blocks of time off.
- The opportunity to develop your experience within a specialist healthcare engineering environment.
- Exposure to a broad range of commercial mechanical and water systems.
- Ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
- The chance to play an important role in maintaining essential hospital infrastructure and supporting the safe operation of healthcare facilities.
