About the role
Morson are recruiting a Project/Portfolio Manager for a long term contract with BAE Systems in Glascoed, South Wales. Candidates must be ok to work full time on site 3 - 4 days/week, no more than 2 days/week can be worked from home.The Project/Portfolio Manager will be appointed to an established technology innovation programme within the Munitions Technology Delivery Team (TDT). Marked as a significant growth area, the Programme/Portfolio Manager will be assuming leadership responsibility for the delivery of major work packages throughout the technology scale up journey and project lifecycle with a core working ethos of being adaptable, value-driven, and customer-centric.The Project/Portfolio Manager will be reporting directly to the Programme Manager and be accountable for ensuring rigorous management and execution. Responsibilities will include the meticulous planning of activities, providing sound and realistic completion estimates, integrating appropriate risk mitigation measures to proactively address potential challenges, and clearly communicate programme threats and opportunities to enable informed decision making. The position may require occasional travel to customer, supplier, and test and evaluation sites.Typical duties include (but are not limited to): • Act as the operational backbone between technical delivery teams and programme leadership, ensuring accurate and timely project control• Maintain transparent management of budget, schedule, scope and change, enabling robust R&D governance and reporting• Establish and enforce programme processes, standards and documentation that bring structure, discipline and repeatability to a fast moving scale up environment• Drive risk, opportunity, assumption and dependency management across the portfolio, ensuring proactive mitigation and escalation• Lead progress tracking, action management and integrated planning to maintain programme momentum and ensure milestones are met• Build trusted relationships with internal stakeholders to remove blockers, enable decisions, and ensure clear communication across the programmeKnowledge, Skills and Qualifications:Knowledge: Experience in regulated, safety-critical or Defence R&D environmentsUnderstanding of technology and manufacturing scale-up and production readiness processesFamiliarity with SAP or similar enterprise systems, plus scheduling/risk tools (e.g., Microsoft Project, Predict!)Previous exposure to energetics or explosive licensing appreciated but not requiredSkills: Demonstrable experience bringing structure and rigour to complex, multi disciplinary technical programmesStrong analytical, detail-oriented approach with proven ability to track actions, manage schedules, and maintain disciplined project controlsEffective communicator with the ability to translate technical updates into clear reportingProven risk, opportunity and dependency management capabilityEvidence of driving delivery in ambiguous or rapidly evolving R&D or technology environmentsQualifications: • Desirable:Project management qualification or equivalent practical experience (e.g., ChPP, PMI, APM, PRINCE)About the team you’ll be working in As part of the Technology Delivery Team, you will bring project management discipline to the management of complex and innovative work packages within a fast paced technology scale up environment. Reporting directly to the Programme Manager, you will work hand in glove with engineering teams to tackle scale up challenges and unlock a capability of high strategic importance. You will be accountable for managing programme scope, budget, schedule and risk, while building strong cross functional and stakeholder relationships to drive the swift and effective resolution of issues. Please be aware that this role is subject to both security and export control restrictions. These restrictions mean that factors such as your nationality, any nationalities you may have previously held, and your place of birth can restrict the roles you are eligible to perform within the organisation. All applicants must as a minimum achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard. Many roles also require higher levels of National Security Vetting where applicants must typically have 5 to 10 years of continuous residency in the UK depending on the vetting level required for the role, to allow for meaningful security vetting checks.
