About the role
Graduating from dental school is a significant milestone, but it is only the beginning of your professional career. Before many newly qualified dentists can practise independently within the NHS, they need to complete Dental Foundation Training (DFT). This structured programme helps bridge the gap between university education and real-world clinical practice.
For overseas dentists, understanding Dental Foundation Training is equally important. Depending on your qualification, registration route and career plans, you may be eligible for DFT or an alternative pathway into UK dentistry. Knowing how the programme works can help you make informed decisions about your next steps.
What Is Dental Foundation Training?
Dental Foundation Training is a structured one-year training programme for newly qualified dentists in the UK. It helps dentists transition from university education to independent practice by combining supervised clinical work with ongoing learning and professional development.
During the programme, foundation dentists work in an approved NHS dental practice under the guidance of an Educational Supervisor. Alongside treating patients, they attend study days, complete workplace assessments and maintain an electronic portfolio to record their progress.
The purpose of Dental Foundation Training is to help dentists become safe, competent and confident practitioners. It also introduces them to NHS systems, patient management, treatment planning, clinical governance and professional responsibilities.
Why Is Dental Foundation Training Important?
The transition from dental school to practising independently can be challenging. While graduates have developed clinical knowledge at university, managing a full patient list and making day-to-day clinical decisions requires additional experience.
Foundation Training provides that experience in a supportive learning environment.
The programme helps dentists to:
- Develop confidence in clinical decision-making.
- Improve communication with patients and colleagues.
- Gain experience delivering NHS dental care.
- Build effective treatment planning skills.
- Understand professional and ethical responsibilities.
- Develop good record-keeping and risk management practices.
- Prepare for independent practice and future career opportunities.
Who Needs to Complete Dental Foundation Training?
The answer depends on where you qualified and your career goals.
UK Dental Graduates
For dentists who graduate from a recognised UK dental school, Dental Foundation Training is the standard first step after university. It allows graduates to gain supervised experience before progressing into NHS primary care.
To enter the programme, applicants generally need to:
- Hold a recognised UK dental degree.
- Be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC).
- Meet the requirements of the national recruitment process.
Overseas Dentists
If you qualified outside the UK, your route is determined by four factors:
- Where You Qualified: EEA graduates benefit from temporary transitional recognition. Non-EEA graduates must pass UK registration exams.
- GDC Status: You must be fully registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) by your DFT start date. Most international dentists must clear the Overseas Registration Exam (ORE) or Licence in Dental Surgery (LDS) exam via the MyGDC Portal.
- Right to Work: Matching with a DFT scheme provides a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS). This allows you to apply for a Health and Care Worker Visa, which waives the UK Immigration Health Surcharge.
- The PLVE Alternative: Experienced overseas dentists can bypass the competitive DFT process entirely. Instead, apply for Performers List Validation by Experience (PLVE) to work under supervision and secure an NHS Performer Number directly.
How Does Dental Foundation Training Work?
Although each training practice is different, the overall structure of Dental Foundation Training is consistent across the UK. The programme combines supervised clinical practice with structured learning, regular assessments and professional development.
Training Practice
Foundation dentists are placed in approved NHS training practices that provide a supportive learning environment.
Here, trainees treat patients under supervision while gaining experience across a broad range of routine dental procedures. As their confidence grows, they gradually take on greater clinical responsibility.
Educational Supervisor
Every foundation dentist works closely with an Educational Supervisor throughout the programme.
The supervisor provides guidance, reviews clinical cases, observes progress and offers regular feedback. Their role is to support learning while helping trainees develop safe and effective clinical practice.
Study Days
Regular study days form an important part of Dental Foundation Training.
These sessions cover topics such as:
- Clinical techniques
- Treatment planning
- Patient communication
- Professional ethics
- Clinical governance
- Leadership and teamwork
Clinical Experience
Most of the training year is spent treating patients in practice.
Foundation dentists develop experience in examining patients, diagnosing oral conditions, planning treatment, carrying out routine procedures and managing patient care under supervision.
Workplace-Based Assessments
Throughout the programme, trainees complete workplace-based assessments to demonstrate their progress.
These assessments are designed to support development rather than simply measure performance. Feedback from supervisors helps identify strengths while highlighting areas where further improvement may be needed.
ePortfolio
Each trainee maintains an electronic portfolio, known as an ePortfolio, throughout Dental Foundation Training. The ePortfolio records assessments, learning activities, reflections and evidence of professional development.
