About the role
Your new company
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join an established, main contractor with an excellent reputation for delivering high-quality projects across the London and Oxfordshire region. With an annual turnover of approximately £10m to £15m, the business delivers a diverse portfolio of £3m to £10m new-build and refurbishment projects across heritage and listed buildings, education, residential, commercial and industrial sectors.
Working across traditional JCT and Design & Build contracts, this is an ideal environment for an ambitious Assistant Quantity Surveyor who wants broader project exposure, greater responsibility and the opportunity to learn directly from an experienced commercial team.
Your new role
As Assistant Quantity Surveyor, you will work closely with a Senior Quantity Surveyor and Commercial Manager, supporting the commercial delivery of projects from procurement through to final account. Unlike roles where you may be restricted to one small part of the commercial process, this position will give you hands-on experience across the full project lifecycle.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Subcontractor enquiries, tender analysis and procurement
- Preparing subcontractor orders
- Taking measurements from drawings and specifications
- Assisting with valuations and applications for payment
- Reviewing subcontractor applications
- Monitoring project costs against budgets
- Managing and recording variations
- Supporting monthly cost reports, cash-flow forecasts and CVRs
- Attending project and subcontractor meetings
- Assisting with final accounts
- Working closely with site teams, Contracts Managers and senior commercial staff
As your experience grows, you will be encouraged to take ownership of increasingly important commercial packages and develop towards managing your own projects.
What you'll need to succeed
This opportunity would suit an ambitious Assistant Quantity Surveyor with approximately 1 to 2 years' experience who is ready to accelerate their development. You could currently be working for a main contractor, residential developer or construction consultancy and be looking for broader commercial exposure.Ideally, you will have:
- 1 to 2 years' Quantity Surveying experience
- A Quantity Surveying or construction-related degree, HNC, HND or equivalent qualification
- Some experience of procurement, valuations and subcontractor management
- Ideally, knowledge of JCT and/or Design & Build contracts would be advantageous
- Strong numerical and organisational skills
- A proactive approach and willingness to learn
- The ambition to develop into a well-rounded Quantity Surveyor
- The ability to travel to projects across London & Oxfordshire and surrounding areas
Attitude and potential are particularly important. You don't need to know everything already. The business is looking for someone who wants to learn, take on responsibility and build a long-term career in commercial construction.
What you'll get in return
Salary between £30K - £50K depending on experience. This is more than simply another Assistant QS position. It offers the opportunity to join a close-knit regional contractor where your development will be visible, and your contribution will genuinely matter.
You can expect:
- Hands-on exposure to £3m to £10m projects
- Experience across new-build, refurbishment, heritage, education, residential and commercial schemes
- Direct mentoring from experienced senior commercial professionals
- Exposure across the full commercial lifecycle rather than one isolated package
- Increasing responsibility as your experience and confidence develop
- Experience working with both JCT and Design & Build contracts
- A clear pathway towards Quantity Surveyor level within approximately 3 to 4 years
- The stability and personal environment of an established, family-run regional contractor
For an Assistant QS who wants to become a capable, commercially rounded Quantity Surveyor, this is an opportunity to gain the project exposure, mentoring and responsibility needed to make that progression. What you need to do now
