About the role
We are looking for a sharp, cost-focused individual who knows the building materials and aggregates world to take the lead on sourcing and buying materials. You will keep supplies coming in reliably and at a good price, build strong relationships with suppliers, and use your market knowledge and negotiating skills to get the business the best possible deals.
As a Supply Chain Manager, you will be responsible for:
- Sourcing and buying materials to meet the business's operational needs.
- Reviewing current purchasing costs and suppliers to find where savings can be made.
- Negotiating prices, contract terms, payment terms and delivery arrangements with suppliers.
- Finding, assessing and onboarding new suppliers to widen choice and reduce supply risk.
- Building and maintaining strong, long-term relationships with key suppliers.
- Securing reliable, continuous supply so operations aren't disrupted by shortages or delays.
- Monitoring supplier performance on price, quality, delivery and service, and acting on any issues.
- Keeping on top of market prices, trends and supply conditions
- Recording and reporting savings achieved against the baseline of current purchasing costs.
- Working closely with operations, finance and site teams to understand demand and plan purchasing.
- Making sure purchasing follows company policies, contracts and relevant regulations.
The ideal candidate will be:
- Experience in construction, building materials, aggregates or quarrying with a good understanding of the products, the supply chain and the key suppliers in the market.
- Commercial experience, such as negotiating prices or terms with suppliers or customers, managing costs or margins, or handling contracts.
- Strong commercial awareness and confident negotiation skills.
- Confident with numbers: able to analyse spend and prices, compare options and track results.
- Experience building and managing relationships with suppliers, customers or contractors.
- Good communication skills, able to work with suppliers and internal teams at all levels.
- Organised, self-motivated and results driven.
Desirable:
- Procurement or buying experience would be an advantage.
