Job summary

This is a great opportunity to play a key role in shaping a promoting a positive and engaging health, safety and wellbeing culture across the Planning Inspectorate.

Working as part of a small specialist team, you'll provide practical advice, guidance and support to managers and employees, helping ensure risks are effectively managed and wellbeing is embedded in everyday ways of working.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is NEBOSH qualified and looking to broaden their experience across a wide range of health, safety and wellbeing activities. You'll work with colleagues at every level of the organisation, influence decision making, contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and help create an environment where people can thrive. As part of the role, you are required to participate in a 24/7 lone working on-call rota. An on-call allowance is payable for this duty.

Job description

We are looking for a proactive and customer-focused health and safety professional who enjoys building relationships, solving problems and helping others navigate complex issues.

You will use your health and safety knowledge and experience to provide practical advice and guidance across a diverse organisation. Working closely with managers, employees and stakeholders, you will help to ensure legal requirements are met, risks are appropriately managed and colleagues have access to the support and information they need.

You will be comfortable managing a varied workload, analysing information, identifying trends and recommending improvements. Equally important will be your ability to communicate clearly, influence positively and build great working relationships with a wide range of people. You will need to do this effectively as your week will include developing, implementing and continuously improving our policies and processes, managing requests relating to DSE assessments, ergonomic equipment and the all important record keeping, supporting our lone working arrangements including taking part in our 24/7 on-call rota or investigating reporting and analysis incident, accident and wellbeing data to identify and recommend improvements.

Role types and Salary details

We have one fixed term post for up to one year covering maternity leave at Higher Executive Officer (HEO) Grade.

Salary

New entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band. Internal rules apply to existing Civil Servants, i.e. level transfers move on current salary or the pay range minimum, transfers on promotion move to new pay range minimum or receive 10% increase. Either case is determined by whichever is the highest.

Working hours

This role is offered on a 37-hour working week. Part-time working (minimum 30 hours per week), compressed hours, and flexible working arrangements are available. The successful candidate will also be required to participate in an on-call rota, providing 24-hour on-call cover for one-week periods (Monday to Sunday).

Office Attendance

This role is contractually based at our office in Bristol, 10-minute walk from Temple Meads train station. We recognise and value the mutual benefits of hybrid working and have a flexible approach to in person attendance, which can vary dependent on the requirements of individual business units - the details of which can be discussed with candidates if invited to attend an interview. Excitingly, we're relocating to a brand new office in December, while maintaining excellent transport links with Bristol Temple Meads station still just a 10 minute walk away.

Essential Criteria

• Hold the NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Safety
• A high standard of written and oral communication skills
• Experience of working in a Health, Safety and Wellbeing Environment
• Works on own initiative and effectively organises and manages a varied workload
• Experience and a good understanding of the use of technology, including MS applications, people systems and working in a Digital-First environment
• Willingness to participate in a 24/7 on-call rota, providing out-of-hours support as required.
