Streetscene Operative – AR

Job Purpose

We are seeking a hardworking and reliable Streetscene Operative to support the delivery of high-quality street cleansing, grounds maintenance and waste collection services.

The successful candidate will help maintain clean, safe and attractive streets, parks, open spaces and public areas. This is a hands-on, physically active role involving outdoor work and the use of a range of machinery and equipment.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out street cleansing and open space maintenance duties.
• Undertake litter picking and street sweeping.
• Remove graffiti, fly-posting and fly-tipping.
• Collect domestic, trade and bulky waste.
• Empty litter bins, domestic bins, trade bins and dog waste bins.
• Carry out grounds maintenance, including grass cutting, hedge and shrub maintenance.
• Maintain parks, beaches, foreshore areas and other public spaces.
• Use equipment including strimmers, mowers, backpack blowers, mechanical sweepers and other small powered machinery.
• Respond to emergency situations, including discarded needles, roadkill and clearing blocked grids and watercourses.
• Clean and secure public buildings, parks and depot areas as required.
• Carry out clearance of derelict land, allotments and unwanted structures.
• Support winter maintenance duties using manual and mechanical equipment.
• Drive and operate vehicles and machinery where appropriately licensed and trained, including vans, pick-up trucks, trailers, tractors, sweepers and ride-on mowing equipment.
• Identify and report hazards, defects and environmental issues to the relevant manager.
• Ensure all work is carried out in line with Health & Safety procedures.
• Provide a professional and customer-focused service at all times.

Essential Experience and Skills

• Previous experience in street cleansing, grounds maintenance, waste collection or a similar outdoor operational role.
• Experience of litter picking, street sweeping, refuse collection or grounds maintenance.
• Experience using equipment such as strimmers, mowers, blowers or mechanical machinery.
• Awareness of relevant Health & Safety requirements.
• Ability to work independently and use initiative.
• Strong team-working skills.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
• A proactive and positive approach to work.
• Ability to carry out physically demanding duties and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Desirable

• Experience of graffiti removal or power washing.
• Experience operating mechanical sweepers or refuse collection equipment.
• Experience driving work vehicles or operating machinery.
• C1 driving licence or other relevant driving qualifications.
• NVQ Level 2 in Grounds Maintenance, Horticulture or a related subject.
• Chemical licence, CE licence or Driver CPC.
