The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is seeking a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to provide technical guidance, governance and assurance across the organisation’s server, hosting and platform infrastructure. Internally, the role is named Lead IT Systems Engineer – Infrastructure. Working within the IT Support function, you will help ensure core IT services remain secure, resilient, stable and aligned to business needs. This is an opportunity to work closely with managed service providers, technical teams and internal users to support critical systems used across the MCA. You will oversee infrastructure operations, support incident and problem resolution, contribute to project delivery and drive continual improvement across on-premises and cloud-based environments.

Job description

As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you will provide technical oversight of MCA’s server and hosting infrastructure, ensuring services delivered through the Managed Service Provider are maintained, monitored, patched and operated effectively. You will act as a senior escalation point for infrastructure support, contribute to project delivery and help ensure MCA systems remain secure, available and performing to expected standards.

Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Providing technical leadership and oversight for MCA server, hosting, storage, backup and disaster recovery infrastructure.
  • Working with the Managed Service Provider to assure infrastructure maintenance, monitoring, patching, capacity management and lifecycle planning.
  • Acting as a senior escalation point for infrastructure incidents, problems and service requests, ensuring support is delivered within agreed targets.
  • Leading, advising and coaching IT colleagues, supporting knowledge sharing and shift-left activity across support teams.
  • Working with technical architects to translate infrastructure designs into effective operational services.
  • Supporting project delivery by guiding technical engineering tasks and bringing new or updated infrastructure services into operation.
  • Maintaining effective relationships with suppliers, partners and internal stakeholders to support service quality and continual improvement.
  • Ensuring infrastructure access, security controls and operational practices comply with relevant policies, standards and regulations.

Person specification

Required experience:

To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:

  1. Experience operating within a technical IT Support environment
  2. Line management experience overseeing performance management targets within an IT support environment
  3. Experience using and supporting diverse IT systems, including Microsoft 365 suite, Microsoft Azure, Active Directory & EntraID & Microsoft Server infrastructure, including networking elements.
  4. Experience working with third party vendors.
  5. Comfortable with project management techniques.
  6. Understanding of Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Principles.
  7. The eligibility to obtain UK Security Clearance.

Additional Information

The role is part of the Government Digital and Data (or Government Security Profession Career Framework) profession and utilises an enhanced Capability–Based Pay Framework which provides access to a Digital and Data allowance.

The base pay is £44,241. In addition to this the role includes a Digital and Data allowance of up to £14,756.

Working hours, office attendance and travel requirements

Full time roles consist of 37 hours per week.

This role is suitable for hybrid working, which is a non-contractual arrangement where a combination of workplace and home-based working can be accommodated subject to business requirements.

The expectation at present is a minimum of 60% of your working time a month will be spent at either your designated workplace (one of the locations cited in the advert) or, when required for business reasons, in another office/work location/visiting stakeholders. Your designated workplace will be your contractual place of work. There may be occasions where you are required to attend above the minimum expectation.

The role is required to partake in the out of hours on call rota to cover high priority incidents outside of normal working hours.

The role will require working from both Maritime and Coastguard Agency Southampton HQ office and Fareham Joint Rescue and Coordination Centre and may require travel to other MCA sites throughout the UK.
