The role - Make a real difference to peoples lives by improving housing standards across Bromsgrove and Redditch.
As a Private Sector Housing Officer, you'll investigate housing complaints, inspect homes, work with landlords and tenants, and use a wide range of enforcement powers to tackle poor housing conditions and landlord behaviour. From unsafe housing and HMOs to empty homes, energy efficiency and mobile home sites, no two days are the same.
Key Requirements
- Carry out inspections of private sector housing using the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) and determine the most appropriate enforcement action.
- Investigate housing complaints and take proportionate enforcement action to improve housing conditions and protect residents.
- Deliver the Council's regulatory responsibilities for HMOs, including licensing, compliance and enforcement.
- Investigate breaches of housing legislation, including the Housing Act 2004, Renters' Rights Act 2025, MEES Regulations and Protection from Eviction Act 1977.
- Work with owners to bring long-term empty homes back into use through advice, support and enforcement where appropriate.
- Build positive relationships with landlords, agents, partner organisations and residents to improve housing standards across both districts.
Skills & experience
- Experience of inspecting private sector housing or undertaking housing enforcement activities.
- Working knowledge of the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS).
- Good understanding of housing legislation and the ability to apply legislation proportionately.
- Excellent communication, negotiation and report-writing skills.
- Ability to manage a varied caseload and make sound, evidence-based decisions.
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for business use
