Job summary

The Ministry of Defence, Civil Service workforce is diverse, with many different functions and professions ranging from cyber and digital transformation, police officers, security guards, trainers, human resources, teachers, psychologists, storekeepers, and policy secretariat staff to support the British Army.

Headquarters South-West (HQSW) is a Joint Military Command (JMC) comprising a fully integrated staff including regular army, civil service, Full Time Reservists (FTRS) and part time Reservists. Together we look after the Army’s interests in the seven counties of the south-west including the Isles of Scilly and Channel Islands. centred around the Four Pillars of ‘UK (United Kingdom) Operations’ ‘The Firm Base’ ‘Engagement’ and ‘Cadets,’ the breadth of our responsibilities is wide and varied, from assurance of the Field Army to response and command of UK Resilience Operations, all tasks that underpin the success of our Army on operations. Finally, our largest annual output is the delivery of the largest outdoor youth activity in the UK, Ten Tors.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide advice and support on telecommunications requirements, working with customers to ensure requests are appropriately justified and supported by the required business case documentation.
  • Act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) and primary point of contact for telecommunications services within the area of responsibility, providing guidance and advice to stakeholders on telecommunications-related matters.
  • Coordinate the delivery of telecommunications services and equipment, managing the planning, ordering, tracking and administration of assets, while resolving issues with service providers and maintaining accurate records.
  • Maintain knowledge of current telecommunications technologies, including telephony hardware, operating systems and related services, to support effective service delivery.
  • Monitor the appropriate use of telecommunications services, investigating potential misuse in line with Defence policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Manage telecommunications asset records and inventories, ensuring assets are accurately tracked, audited and accounted for throughout their lifecycle.
  • Lead the disposal of obsolete or unserviceable telecommunications equipment, ensuring disposals are carried out in accordance with Defence Equipment Sales Authority (DESA) processes and relevant policy requirements.
  • To complete all mandatory training once in post.
  • Potential opportunity to take on line management responsibilities in the future.

Essential skills required:
  • We are seeking a proactive individual capable of working independently without guidance from their Line Manager, while also being adaptable to shifting priorities and demands.
  • Collaborate effectively across the branch and the wider HQ as required.
    Ability to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of relevant policies, procedures and publications, ensuring branch and customer processes remain accurate and compliant.
  • An organised and practical approach to daily tasks is essential to methodically manage the Group Mailbox, responding appropriately to each new email while consistently being aware of GDPR regulations.
