About the role

Department for Transport

Deputy Director – Analysis, Enablers and Strategy, Future Transport Systems

Locations: Birmingham, Leeds, Swansea

Salary: £86,000, SCS Pay Band 1

The Department for Transport (DfT) supports the transport network that keeps people and businesses connected, helping to facilitate travel, trade and economic activity across the UK. The Department sponsors a broad range of Public Bodies that deliver vital public services, invest taxpayers’ money and manage significant risks. These include executive agencies such as DVLA and DVSA, delivery companies such as Network Rail and National Highways, regulators such as Civil Aviation Authority and Office of Road and Rail, as well as advisory bodies like the Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee.

As Deputy Director – Analysis, Enablers and Strategy, you will join the Future Transport Systems Directorate, one of DfT’s most innovative, future-focused Directorates. The Directorate plays a vital role in shaping transport policy, driving cutting edge approaches to solving some of the most complex challenges facing the transport system, including road safety, vehicle standards, connected and automated vehicles, transport and innovation, as well as sponsorship of the UK’s motoring agencies.

As the most senior analyst within the Directorate, you will lead a diverse, multi-disciplinary team, which brings together economics, social research, statistics, policy, project delivery, strategy, administration and corporate support. You will oversee the delivery of timely, high-quality analysis that shapes the Directorate’s policy development and delivery plans, working with stakeholders across the Department, and beyond. You will need to be a member of, or eligible to become a member of, one of the Government’s analytical professions, with strong leadership credentials, a strategic mindset and the ability to work effectively with a broad range of stakeholders.

We are keen to attract candidates with a wide range of experiences and perspectives from within or outside of Government. We are particularly interested in applications from people from currently under-represented groups including those from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds and people with disabilities.
