About the role
Milk Education are working in partnership with a successful and inclusive secondary school in Leeds to recruit a dedicated Pastoral Assistant to join their pastoral team. This is an excellent opportunity for an Aspiring Psychologist who is passionate about supporting young people, understanding behaviour and helping students overcome barriers to learning.
The successful Pastoral Assistant will work closely with students across Key Stages 3 and 4, providing targeted pastoral and emotional support to improve wellbeing, engagement, behaviour and academic outcomes. This role would be particularly suited to graduates or aspiring professionals looking to gain valuable experience before progressing into Educational Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Counselling, Mental Health, SEN, Social Work or Youth Work.
As a Pastoral Assistant, you will play a key role in developing positive relationships with students and helping them feel understood, supported and able to thrive within a nurturing school environment.
The Role:
- Working as a Pastoral Assistant to support students with their wellbeing, behaviour, emotional regulation and engagement
- Providing 1:1 mentoring and support sessions
- Supporting students experiencing social, emotional or behavioural challenges
- Developing positive and trusting relationships with young people
- Observing and understanding student behaviour and identifying potential barriers to learning
- Supporting students to develop confidence, resilience and positive coping strategies
- Working closely with Heads of Year, safeguarding teams, SEND staff and pastoral leaders
- Supporting positive behaviour and restorative approaches
- Encouraging students to develop independence and take ownership of their learning and behaviour
- Maintaining accurate records and contributing to pastoral support plans
- Providing feedback to teaching and pastoral staff regarding student wellbeing and progress

The Ideal Candidate:
- A recent graduate or aspiring professional interested in Psychology, Educational Psychology, Child Development, Mental Health or Education
- A degree in Psychology or a related subject is desirable but not essential
- Previous experience supporting children or young people is desirable but not essential
- Experience through volunteering, mentoring, coaching, tutoring, youth work or similar environments is highly valued
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Patient, empathetic and emotionally intelligent approach
- Genuine interest in understanding young people’s behaviour and individual needs
- Ability to remain calm and professional when supporting challenging situations
- Passion for improving outcomes for children and young people
- Strong desire to develop a career working with young people
Essential Requirements:
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)
- Right to Work in the UK
- Two professional references covering the last two years
- A genuine interest in supporting children and young people
