Job summary

Are you ready to join an expanding team in Defence Modelling & Simulation (M&S), an exciting and rapidly growing technical discipline used for training, experimentation, decision support and more?

We are looking for a motivated and knowledgeable professional to join our team in the Defence Modelling & Simulation Centre (DMSC) as a Technical Officer. You will play a key role in driving M&S coherence across Defence, supporting innovation, and ensuring interoperability. The ideal candidate will have a passion for technical problem-solving and a commitment to promoting the effective use of M&S resources. You’ll work closely with Front Line Commands, Other Government Departments, and Allies, providing impartial technical advice and helping shape Defence capabilities' future.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

Do you want to help shape the way Defence uses modelling and simulation to make better decisions, develop future capability, and maximise value from investment?

As a Technical Officer within the Defence Modelling & Simulation Centre (DMSC), you will have the opportunity to work across Defence, supporting major programmes, projects and stakeholders to make the most effective use of modelling and simulation.

This is a varied and engaging role where no two days are the same. You will provide impartial technical advice, help assure new and existing capabilities, engage with industry and academic partners, and support the sharing and reuse of knowledge across Defence.

You will play an important role in helping Defence develop coherent, interoperable and effective solutions that support operational and strategic decision-making.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide technical advice and guidance to Defence stakeholders.
  • Support assurance and governance activities for modelling and simulation capabilities.
  • Help improve collaboration, interoperability and reuse across Defence programmes.
  • Engage with industry, academia, allies and government partners to understand emerging opportunities and challenges.
  • Contribute to business improvement initiatives, digital transformation activities and the development of future ways of working.
  • Build and maintain relationships with a wide range of stakeholders across Defence.
  • Participate in events and meet with stakeholders that will involve national and international travel.

You will be supporting the Technical Authority Head in driving M&S technical coherence, interoperability, and reuse, ensuring the maximum effective use of Modelling & Simulation across Defence. This is an exciting opportunity to develop a broad understanding of Defence, work with experts from across government, industry and academia, and directly contribute to the future use of modelling and simulation across Defence.

  • Constructive Simulations (e.g., CGFs, SAFs, Mission Data).
  • Distributed Simulation techniques and frameworks.
  • Synthetic Environments, such as Terrain/Visual Database (T/VDBs), Image Generators (IGs), and 3D models.
  • Extended Reality (XR) technologies.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and working from home as part of a non-contractual hybrid working arrangement. All office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to site capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD workplace, will also count towards this level of office attendance. The post does not offer relocation expenses.
