Are you a passionate and experienced SEN Teaching Assistant looking for your next rewarding opportunity in education? Do you have experience supporting children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN), Autism and Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)?
Balfor Recruitment is currently recruiting for an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEN school in Gloucestershire from January 2027. This is an exciting opportunity for a dedicated Teaching Assistant who is passionate about supporting pupils with additional needs and helping them achieve their full potential.
The school is a dynamic and inspiring specialist provision supporting children and young people aged 7–19 with a primary or secondary diagnosis of Autism and related social and communication needs.
The school provides a supportive and inclusive learning environment designed to meet pupils’ individual academic, social, emotional and developmental needs at every stage of their educational journey.
As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with pupils, teachers and other professionals to provide 1:1 and small-group support, helping pupils develop their confidence, independence, communication, emotional regulation and social skills.

SEN Teaching Assistant Responsibilities
As an SEN Teaching Assistant, your responsibilities will include:
- Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with a range of SEN needs, particularly Autism and Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).
- Building warm, caring and supportive relationships with pupils to help them feel safe, valued and confident within school.
- Supporting pupils with emotional regulation, resilience and social development.
- Working alongside the class teacher to adapt lessons, activities and resources to meet individual learning needs.
- Modifying and differentiating learning resources according to pupils’ abilities and individual requirements.
- Supporting positive behaviour and helping maintain a calm, structured and supportive classroom environment.
- Acting as a key adult for identified pupils and providing consistent emotional and pastoral support.
- Encouraging pupils to develop positive relationships and appropriate social and communication skills.
- Monitoring and recording pupil progress, engagement and development.
- Providing regular feedback to teachers and relevant professionals regarding pupil progress, achievements and challenges.
- Promoting independence, confidence and personal development.
- Maintaining high expectations for positive behaviour, engagement and achievement.
- Supporting the implementation of individual learning, behaviour and support plans where required.
- Following school policies relating to safeguarding, child protection, behaviour and health and safety.
SEN Teaching Assistant Requirements
To be considered for this SEN Teaching Assistant vacancy in Gloucestershire, you will need:
- Previous experience working within an SEN, SEND or specialist education setting – Essential.
- Experience working as a Teaching Assistant, ideally providing 1:1 support.
- Experience supporting children or young people with Autism, communication needs or additional learning needs.
- GCSE Maths and English at Level 2 / Grade C or above – desirable.
- A nurturing, patient and empathetic approach to supporting pupils.
- Strong behaviour management skills and the ability to remain calm and consistent under pressure.
- Adaptability and resilience when supporting pupils with a range of individual needs.
- Excellent communication skills when working with pupils, teachers, families and other professionals.
- An understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
- A genuine passion for supporting children and young people with SEN to achieve their potential.
