Lathe & Press Operator Location: Manchester Job Type: Permanent Salary: Up to £40,000 per annum + Excellent BenefitsAre you an experienced Lathe & Press Operator looking to join a leading organisation in the rail rolling stock industry?We are recruiting on behalf of a highly respected engineering business based in Manchester for a skilled and motivated Lathe & Press Operator. This is an excellent opportunity to become part of a specialist team responsible for the machining, assembly, and refurbishment of critical rail components, helping to keep fleets operating safely and reliably across the UK.The Role Working within a modern engineering environment, youll be responsible for operating CNC horizontal lathes and hydraulic wheel presses to manufacture and refurbish wheelsets and axle components to the highest standards of quality, precision, and safety. This is a hands-on role where accuracy, attention to detail, and a commitment to engineering excellence are essential. Key Responsibilities Operate and set up CNC horizontal lathes to machine axles and rotating components to precise engineering tolerances. Carry out hydraulic wheel pressing and wheelset assembly operations. Read and interpret engineering drawings, machining programmes, and technical specifications. Perform dimensional inspections using precision measuring equipment, including micrometres, bore gauges, dial test indicators, and surface finish testers. Ensure all work meets strict quality, safety, and production standards. Identify machining or assembly issues and work proactively to resolve them. Maintain machinery, tooling, and work areas to high housekeeping (5S) standards. Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and support an efficient, safe production environment.About You Were looking for someone who combines strong technical ability with a positive, safety-first attitude.You will ideally have: NVQ Level 3 (or above) in a relevant Mechanical or Electrical Engineering discipline. Proven experience operating CNC horizontal lathes and hydraulic presses within the rail, aerospace, heavy engineering, manufacturing, or similar precision engineering sectors. Experience machining components to tight tolerances and high-quality surface finishes. Confidence in interpreting engineering drawings and technical documentation. Strong knowledge of precision measuring equipment and inspection techniques. A methodical approach with excellent attention to detail. The ability to work independently while contributing positively within a close-knit engineering team. A commitment to health and safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
