Location requirement: Successful applicants must live within a reasonable commuting distance of their agreed office location (within a 45-minute drive or 25 miles, whichever is less). Relocation costs are not available.

Survey & Inspection at the MCA

Survey & Inspection is part of the UK Technical Maritime Services (UKTMS) Directorate within the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). Our Marine Surveyors play a vital role in delivering the Government's vision for Safer Ships, Cleaner Seas, helping to maintain high standards of maritime safety and environmental protection across the UK.

The Role

As a Marine Surveyor, you will inspect, audit and survey ships and maritime operators to ensure compliance with UK legislation and international conventions covering safety, security, welfare and pollution prevention. Where appropriately qualified, you will also conduct oral examinations for seafarers, supporting high standards of competence across the industry.

Key Responsibilities

• Inspect, audit and survey ships and maritime operators to ensure compliance with UK and international maritime regulations.

• Approve stability information, where qualified.

• Conduct seafarer oral examinations as a Nautical Examiner, where qualified.

• Carry out safety management audits under the International Safety Management (ISM) Code.

• Inspect ships and port facilities for compliance with UK legislation and international conventions.

• Undertake Port State Control inspections of foreign vessels as a qualified Port State Control Officer (PSCO), in line with the Paris MoU.

Essential qualifications/licenses

1. A valid passport for international travel.
2. A full UK driving license.
3. Maritime Professional with the qualifications detailed in this advert.

Required experience

To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:

• Proven experience as a Maritime professional, with the qualifications outlined in this advert

• Strong customer service skills

• The ability to make quick, effective decisions and manage a varied workload with competing priorities

• Excellent communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders

Additional Information

You will need to undergo a Counter-Terrorist Check (CTC) and provide proof of UK residency for the last three consecutive years.

At the time of employment, you must reside within a reasonable commuting distance (45 minutes’ drive or 25 miles which either is least) from an agreed location within the supported geographical area. Relocation costs are not supported.

Please note that this is a uniformed role, and uniform will be required to be worn at all times when on duty.

Working pattern and training:

Full-time roles consist of 37 hours per week.

During the first 12 months of the Marine Surveyor Development Scheme, the role is full-time only. Following completion of this initial training period, flexible working arrangements may be discussed with your local Marine Office.

We are committed to developing our Marine Surveyors to the highest standard. In return, we provide comprehensive, role-specific training through the Marine Surveyor Development Scheme. This includes a combination of formal courses and on-the-job training, delivered by experienced surveyors. Training may take place at any Marine Office across the UK.

Travel and working hours:

You will be required to travel on official duty within the UK, as well as undertake short-term visits overseas or offshore. This may involve overnight stays away from home.

Occasionally, you may be required to work outside of normal working hours.
