About the role
HEO - Loan Repayments Officer
Grade: HEO
Location:
- Workington, Cumbria (CA14 2DD),
Working Pattern:
- Monday to Friday
- 9:00am to 5:00pm
- Hybrid working with 60% office attendance required
Pay Rate: £18.00 per hour
Start Date: 24 August 2026 (subject to approval)
Assignment Length: 14 months
Extension Potential: Yes
Security Clearance:
- Basic DBS required, Provided by brookstreet
- Must be eligible for SC Clearance, which will be processed during the assignment

Key Responsibilities
The Loan Repayments Officer will:
- Manage a caseload of loan repayment cases and maintain accurate records.
- Monitor and track loan repayments, ensuring all information is updated and recorded correctly.
- Analyse, interrogate and evaluate financial and repayment data.
- Use spreadsheets, case logs and tracking tools to monitor progress and outcomes.
- Contact customers and stakeholders by email and telephone to progress cases and obtain information.
- Handle sensitive personal and financial information in accordance with data protection requirements.
- Escalate risks, issues and complex cases where appropriate.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, suppliers and customers to resolve queries and support service delivery.
- Support wider activities across the Defra Pension Team as business needs require.
- Learn and apply pension-related processes and guidance, although no formal pension qualification is required.
Essential Skills and Experience
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Excellent attention to detail and record-keeping skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
- Confidence communicating with stakeholders by phone and email.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Advanced Microsoft Office capability, particularly Excel (essential).
- Strong analytical and numerical skills.
- Experience working with data, spreadsheets, reporting tools or case management systems.
- Sound judgement and ability to identify and escalate risks appropriately.
- Ability to handle confidential information sensitively and professionally.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and changing environment.
- Flexibility and resilience to support wider team activities when required.
Desirable Experience
- Previous experience within finance, pensions administration, debt recovery, loan repayments, or data management environments.
- Experience interpreting and working with financial information.
- Exposure to public sector or government environments.
Training and Additional Information
- Ongoing training and support will be provided throughout the assignment.
- No holiday restrictions beyond avoiding leave during the initial few weeks where possible.
- Attendance at a team away day in London on 7th and 8th October will be required.
- No additional travel requirements for training.
- No workplace restrictions or known conflicts of interest applicable to the role.
- The role is not classified as a Reserved Post and does not require UK passport holder status.
