Common interview questions

The questions UK employers ask most, grouped by type, with a strong-answer tip under each. Prep a few real examples and walk in ready.

About you

The warm-up questions almost every interview opens with. Keep answers short, positive and relevant to the job.

  • Tell me about yourself.

Strong answer Give a 60-second summary of your recent experience and skills, then link it to the role. This is not your life story, it is your pitch for this job.

  • Why do you want this job?

Strong answer Show you have read the advert and looked at the company. Name one or two specific things that appeal, and how the role fits where you want to go.

  • What are your strengths?

Strong answer Pick two or three that match the job, and back each with a quick real example rather than just naming a trait.

  • What is your biggest weakness?

Strong answer Name a genuine one, then explain what you are doing to improve it. Avoid the fake "I work too hard" answer, employers see through it.

  • Why are you leaving your current job?

Strong answer Stay positive. Talk about what you are moving towards, more responsibility, new skills, a better fit, not what you are running from.

Competency and behaviour

These ask for real examples. Use the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Have three or four solid stories ready to adapt.

  • Tell me about a time you worked in a team.

Strong answer Use STAR. Be clear about what you personally did, not just what the team did, and finish with the result.

  • Describe a time you dealt with a difficult customer or colleague.

Strong answer Show you stayed calm, listened, and found a fair outcome. Employers want to see you keep your head under pressure.

  • Give an example of when you solved a problem.

Strong answer Walk through how you spotted it, what options you weighed, what you did and how it turned out. Keep it concrete.

  • Tell me about a time you missed a deadline or made a mistake.

Strong answer Own it honestly, focus on what you learned and how you put it right. Ducking the question looks worse than the mistake.

  • How do you handle pressure or a busy shift?

Strong answer Give a real example: how you prioritise, stay organised and ask for help when needed. Reliability under pressure sells you.

Warehouse and logistics

Expect questions about safety, accuracy and keeping pace. Employers care most about reliability and care with the stock.

  • How do you make sure you pick orders accurately?

Strong answer Talk about double-checking against the pick list, scanning correctly and not rushing so much that you cut corners on accuracy.

  • What would you do if you spotted a health and safety hazard?

Strong answer Say you would make the area safe if you can, report it straight away and never walk past it. Safety-first answers land well.

  • Are you comfortable being on your feet and hitting targets all shift?

Strong answer Be honest and positive. Mention any relevant experience of physical, target-driven work and your good attendance record.

  • Do you have any tickets, such as a forklift or manual handling?

Strong answer State clearly what you hold and how current it is. If you have none, show willingness to train and learn quickly.

Driving

Alongside your licence and experience, employers probe safety, service and how you handle problems on the road.

  • What is your licence category and how clean is it?

Strong answer Be upfront about your category, any points and your experience. Honesty matters, they will check.

  • How do you plan a multi-drop route?

Strong answer Mention checking the manifest, sensible ordering of drops, allowing for traffic and keeping the customer updated if you are running late.

  • What would you do if your vehicle developed a fault?

Strong answer Show you would not drive an unsafe vehicle: stop safely, report it and follow procedure. Safety and compliance beat getting the job done.

  • How do you handle a difficult delivery or an unhappy customer?

Strong answer Stay calm and polite, solve what you can, and escalate properly. You are the face of the company at the door.

Care and support

These roles are about people. Expect questions on compassion, dignity, safeguarding and staying calm in hard moments.

  • Why do you want to work in care?

Strong answer Be genuine. A real reason, wanting to help people, a personal experience, matters more than a polished script.

  • How would you protect someone's dignity and independence?

Strong answer Talk about listening, offering choice, asking before you act and doing things with people rather than to them.

  • What would you do if you had a safeguarding concern?

Strong answer Show you know to report it promptly to the right person and record it. Never keep a concern to yourself.

  • How do you cope with the emotional side of the job?

Strong answer Show self-awareness: you stay professional, use your team for support and know how to look after your own wellbeing.

Hospitality and retail

Customer-facing roles test your service, energy and how you deal with busy periods and awkward situations.

  • What does good customer service look like to you?

Strong answer Give a clear picture: friendly, attentive, quick to help and going a little further than expected. A quick example seals it.

  • How would you handle a complaint?

Strong answer Listen, apologise, put it right where you can and know when to involve a manager. Do not take it personally.

  • How do you stay positive during a long or busy shift?

Strong answer Mention pacing yourself, supporting the team and keeping the customer experience up even when it is hectic.

  • How would you encourage a customer to buy or upsell?

Strong answer Show you can suggest naturally and helpfully based on what the customer needs, not pushy selling.

Your questions and closing

Always have a couple of questions ready. It shows genuine interest and a good one can leave a strong final impression.

  • Do you have any questions for us?

Strong answer Ask about the team, what a typical shift looks like, training or how success is measured. Avoid leading with pay and holidays.

  • What are your salary expectations?

Strong answer Give a sensible range based on the market and the advert. Our salary guide can help you pitch it right.

  • When can you start?

Strong answer Be clear and realistic about your notice period. Flexibility is a plus, but do not overpromise.

The STAR method, in one line

For any "tell me about a time" question, answer in four beats: the Situation you were in, the Task you had to do, the Action you took, and the Result. It keeps you clear and stops you rambling.
