About the role

Job Title: Specialist EOTIS Tutor & Mentor (GCSE Maths & English)

Location: Basildon (Community-based, e.g., local library)

Start Date: 1st September 2026

Hours: 6 hours per week (3 hours per day, 2 days a week, 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM)

About the Role

We are seeking an energetic, patient, and highly engaging tutor-mentor to deliver a tailored Education Otherwise Than In School (EOTIS) package for a Year 10 male student in the Basildon area.

The student has diagnoses of ASD, ADHD, and significant anxiety. He struggles with language processing, sustaining attention, and traditional academic pressure. This role is as much about mentoring and building a trusting relationship as it is about academic delivery.

You will meet the student in a quiet community setting (such as a local library) to deliver low-stress, highly supportive GCSE Maths and English tuition.

Key Responsibilities
  • Relationship-First Mentoring: Act as a positive male role model. Use shared interests-particularly football and gaming-to build rapport, build self-esteem, and ease the student's academic anxiety.
  • Deliver Core Academics: Teach GCSE-level English and Maths, adapting your pace to accommodate language processing difficulties and shorter attention spans.
  • Utilise EdTech (CENTURY): Integrate the CENTURY AI learning platform into your sessions. You will run low-stakes baseline assessments to identify knowledge gaps without testing anxiety, and use bite-sized "nuggets" (10-15 minute lessons) to manage his ADHD.
  • Manage Anxiety & Rigidity: Provide clear, gentle transitions and warning signs before changing tasks. Never force learning; focus on de-escalation, active listening, and offering breaks when the student feels overwhelmed.
  • Manage the Environment: Assess and select study spaces within the community venue that are quiet and free from sensory triggers (like loud noises and heavy foot traffic).

What We Are Looking For
  • Subject Expertise: Confident delivering GCSE English and Maths, with the ability to explain concepts simply and clearly.
  • SEN/SEMH Experience: Proven experience working with young people with Autism, ADHD, school avoidance, and high anxiety.
  • The Right Personality: Energetic, reassuring, and non-overbearing. A genuine interest in football and gaming is highly desirable to help bridge the gap and build trust.
  • Tech-Literacy: Comfortable using AI-driven educational platforms (like CENTURY) to guide lessons and track progress.

Requirements & Transport
  • Must hold a full UK driving licence and have access to a car to reliably commute to community venues in the Basildon area.
  • Must hold an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
  • Confident working independently in public community spaces while maintaining safeguarding boundaries.
