About the role

Mechanical Design Engineer

Marine / Naval Systems – Gateshead (Hybrid)
Jackson Hogg is recruiting for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a global leader in advanced maritime technology, supporting complex naval and offshore equipment projects. This role sits within a specialist engineering team delivering high-integrity deck machinery and handling systems for defence and marine applications, and is an excellent opportunity for a junior to mid-level Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys hands-on engineering, first-principles calculations, and full lifecycle involvement - from concept through to installation and in-service support.

Responsibilities of the Mechanical Design Engineer

  • Develop mechanical engineering solutions from requirements capture and concept design through to detailed design, manufacture, testing, commissioning and in-service support.
  • Perform engineering calculations using first principles (hand calcs / MathCAD) to assess and optimise designs.
  • Produce technical documentation including design reports, equipment specifications, test procedures, and manuals in line with marine and defence standards.
  • Support supplier engagement, factory acceptance testing (FAT), and technical approvals with external bodies (e.g. marine classification societies / defence authorities).
  • Contribute to R&D and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product performance and maintain technological advantage.
Requirements of the Mechanical Design Engineer
  • BEng in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent practical engineering experience).
  • Post-graduate industry experience in a regulated industry (marine, offshore, subsea, oil & gas, defence or similar).
  • Strong grounding in first-principles calculations and engineering fundamentals (calcs capability essential).
  • Experience with 3D CAD (preferably Creo; other packages considered) and familiarity with engineering documentation standards.
  • Confident communicator with the personality and collaborative approach to thrive in a close-knit engineering team.

This Mechanical Design Engineer position would suit someone ready to step into greater technical ownership of projects, with scope to grow toward chartership and increased responsibility. The company is open to candidates from graduate development programmes, apprenticeship routes, or those with offshore/subsea testing experience, provided they demonstrate solid engineering fundamentals. If this sounds like a role you're interested in, apply here now or get in touch with Lily Campbell-Hewson at Jackson Hogg to discuss further!
