School Maintenance Operative (Caretaker / Site Maintenance)

Location: Stockport (SK6)
Salary: Up to £30,000 per annum
Hours: Full-Time, 40 hours per week

About the Role

Joneshouse Recruitment is currently recruiting for an experienced and proactive School Maintenance Operative to support the upkeep and maintenance of a specialist education setting in Stockport.

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled caretaker/maintenance professional to play a vital role in ensuring the school environment remains safe, secure, and well maintained. The successful candidate will support a wide range of maintenance tasks, contributing to the smooth running of the site and helping provide a safe learning environment for vulnerable young people.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out and record regular checks on fire alarms, emergency lighting, playground equipment, legionella risks, and other compliance areas
• Complete general maintenance duties as directed, including carpentry, plumbing, decorating, and repairs
• Create and manage a rolling decoration programme, planned around school holiday periods
• Oversee contractors on-site, ensuring safe working practices and quality standards are maintained
• Undertake general grounds maintenance, including grass cutting and hedge trimming when required
• Ensure safe pedestrian access at all times, including clearing leaves, moss, and pathways
• Carry out gritting and snow clearing during severe weather
• Support with any other reasonable tasks as requested by senior leadership or estates management

What We’re Looking For

City & Guilds Carpentry & Joinery Qualification (or equivalent) – Essential
Minimum 7 years’ experience as a multi-skilled maintenance operative – Essential
Previous experience in a similar caretaker/maintenance role – Essential
Ability to work independently without direct supervision – Essential
Organised, practical, and solutions-focused approach – Essential

Desirable:

• Health & Safety qualifications such as CSCS / IOSH / NEBOSH
