Maintenance Caretaker

Location: Birmingham, B38
Salary: £30,000 per annum
Hours: Full-Time, 40 hours per week

About the Role

Joneshouse Recruitment is recruiting for an experienced School Maintenance Operative to join a specialist education setting in Birmingham.

This is a rewarding opportunity to help provide a safe, secure, and well-maintained learning environment for children and young people. You’ll carry out a variety of maintenance, repair, and site management duties, ensuring the school premises remain safe, compliant, and fully operational.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out routine maintenance, repairs, and general upkeep of the school site.
• Complete regular safety checks, including fire alarms, emergency lighting, playground equipment, and legionella monitoring.
• Undertake basic carpentry, plumbing, decorating, and general maintenance tasks.
• Plan and manage a rolling decoration programme during school holiday periods.
• Oversee contractors on site, ensuring work is completed safely and to a high standard.
• Maintain school grounds, including grass cutting, hedge trimming, and general outdoor maintenance.
• Keep pathways and entrances safe and accessible, including leaf clearance, gritting, and snow clearance during adverse weather.
• Support the Head Teacher and Estates Team with additional maintenance tasks as required.

Requirements

Essential

• City & Guilds Carpentry & Joinery qualification (or equivalent).
• Minimum of 7 years’ experience as a multi-skilled maintenance operative.
• Previous experience in a similar maintenance or caretaker role.
• Ability to work independently and manage your workload effectively.
• Strong organisational skills with a practical, problem-solving approach.

Desirable

• Health & Safety qualifications such as CSCS, IOSH, or NEBOSH.
