About the role

Nuclear Trainer & Skills Coach

Oxford – Full-Time Permanent

£38,000-£42,000

We’re looking for an experienced hands-on engineer or technician who’s ready to step away from shift work or site-based maintenance and move into a training and development role.

This is a chance to take real-world engineering experience and use it to develop the next generation of engineers working across nuclear, electrical, and mechanical disciplines. The focus is on building competence, confidence, and capability through coaching, mentoring, and practical skills delivery.

This role will suit someone who has spent a number of years working in a high-hazard, high-standard engineering environment and is now looking to pass that experience on in a structured training setting.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll deliver and support Level 2 and Level 3 Engineering apprentices across:

  • Electrical principles and maintenance
  • Mechanical systems and fault finding
  • Safe systems of work in high-risk environments
  • Practical, workshop-based skills development

Coach and develop apprentices in the workplace

  • Support apprentices through their full programme
  • Break down complex engineering knowledge into practical learning
  • Help learners build confidence, competence, and professional behaviours

Assess competence and track progress

  • Monitor apprentice development against apprenticeship standards
  • Carry out regular progress reviews with learners and employers
  • Support preparation for End Point Assessment (EPA)

Maintain safety and compliance

  • Ensure all training activity meets strict health, safety, and quality standards
  • Promote safe working practices at all times

What you’ll need (essential)

  • Level 3 qualification in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical or Multi-Skilled)
  • Strong hands-on background in industry
  • Experience working in a structured, safety-critical or regulated environment
  • Natural ability to coach, mentor or support others (formal or informal experience is fine
  • Willingness to work towards:
    • Assessor qualification (A1 / CAVA or equivalent)
    • Teaching qualification (if not already held)

Desirable experience

  • Background in nuclear, defence, power generation or heavy industry
  • Experience supporting or training apprentices or junior engineers
  • Good understanding of health & safety and RAMS
  • Exposure to quality assurance or internal auditing
  • Teaching or training qualifications (e.g. PTLLS / Level 3 Education & Training)
  • Higher-level engineering qualification (Level 4+)

What tends to make someone successful here
The people who do well in this role usually:

  • Have solid “been there and done it” engineering experience
  • Can explain technical problems in a simple, practical way
  • Naturally support and develop others on the job
  • Have a strong understanding of safety and standards
  • Are looking for a long-term move into training and development

Why move into this role
This is an opportunity to:

  • Step away from shift patterns or hands-on site work
  • Stay connected to real engineering without being on the tools
  • Shape and develop the next generation of engineers
  • Build a long-term career in technical training and skills development
  • Work in a structured, professional learning environment

Vetting & safeguarding
Learner safety and wellbeing are central to this role. All shortlisted candidates will be subject to standard safer recruitment checks, including employment and reference history, identity and right to work verification, qualification checks, and an enhanced DBS check (including children’s barred list where applicable).
