Principal Embedded Application Engineer job in Cambridge – DOE

Sepura is looking to fill an Principal Embedded Application Engineer job in Cambridge to join its software engineering team and contribute to the development of advanced digital radio and critical communications products. Reporting to the Services Team Leader, this role will focus on designing, developing, and maintaining embedded application software for Sepura’s portfolio of mission-critical communication devices and accessories.

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior software engineer with extensive experience developing commercial embedded Linux and Android applications who is looking to take on greater technical responsibility and influence the direction of complex software projects.

The Role

As a Principal Embedded Application Engineer, you will play a key role in the design, implementation, testing, and ongoing enhancement of embedded software solutions used within Sepura’s digital radio product range. Working across multiple operating systems, including Embedded Linux and Android, you will help deliver reliable and innovative communication technologies used by customers around the world.

The successful candidate will combine strong technical expertise with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams. You will be involved in both new product development and the ongoing improvement of existing software components, helping to solve complex technical challenges while providing leadership and guidance across software projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and test embedded application software for digital radio products and associated accessories.
  • Develop software solutions across Embedded Linux and Android platforms.
  • Define, estimate, and plan software development activities at component level.
  • Produce technical documentation including architecture, design, and test specifications.
  • Participate in project planning activities, technical reviews, and design discussions.
  • Perform software integration testing and support issue investigation and resolution.
  • Contribute to the development of new product functionality as well as enhancements to existing platforms.
  • Support software quality initiatives through structured testing and validation processes.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams, suppliers, and customers to deliver robust technical solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership across software development activities and support strategic project planning.

The software engineering teams operate using Agile development methodologies, with Scrum ceremonies forming the foundation of the development process. Engineers work across a variety of projects and technologies, contributing to multiple software components throughout each development sprint.

This position offers a varied and technically challenging environment where no two projects are the same, providing opportunities to work on innovative communication technologies alongside highly experienced engineering teams.

Please note that this role will require security clearance.

Skills and Experience Required

The successful candidate will have extensive experience in embedded software development and a strong background in both Linux and Android application development.

Essential Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • More than 10 years of commercial software development experience.
  • Strong background developing Linux and Android applications for commercial products.
  • Advanced programming experience using C and Java.
  • Solid understanding of embedded software development, particularly user-space application development in C.
  • Good knowledge of RTOS environments and embedded software architectures.
  • Experience developing Android applications using modern development frameworks and architectural approaches.
  • Demonstrated experience applying Test-Driven Development (TDD) practices within both embedded C and Android development environments.
  • Ability to interpret and implement complex technical specifications and industry standards, including protocols and standards such as ETSI, 3GPP, RFC, or similar.
  • Experience working across multiple software disciplines with a broad technical skill set.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to take ownership of projects and provide technical leadership across development activities.
  • Experience scoping and planning large, multidisciplinary software projects with strong attention to detail.
Desirable Experience

The following experience would be advantageous but is not essential:

  • Experience developing software for mission-critical or safety-critical systems.
  • Knowledge of communication technologies and standards such as TETRA, DMR, LTE, MCX, or related wireless communications platforms.
  • Experience working with ARM-based processors and embedded hardware platforms.
  • Knowledge of multi-core system optimisation and performance tuning.
  • Additional experience within telecommunications, radio communications, or critical communications environments.
