Learning Disability Support Worker/HCA

About the Role As a Learning Disability Support Worker, you will be supporting individuals with learning disabilities and autism, each with their own unique personalities, routines, and ways of communicating. Many of the individuals you support may be non-verbal or communicate differently, so your ability to understand and adapt is key. You will be expected to work confidently with communication approaches such as: · Makaton · PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) · Visual aids and structured routines · Non-verbal communication techniques · Some individuals may use behaviour as a form of communication, particularly when they feel overwhelmed, anxious, or unable to express their needs. This means you will need to respond with patience, consistency, and a calm approach, using Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) principles. · You may support individuals with autism who rely on routine and predictability, so maintaining structure, reducing triggers, and creating a safe environment is essential. · This role is not just about care — it is about understanding the person behind the behaviour, building trust over time, and supporting individuals to feel safe, valued, and independent.
