To work alongside and support the Nursery Cook in the preparation and provision of healthy, balanced and nutritious meals and snacks for children from birth to 5 years.

Overview

This Level 2 Production Chef apprenticeship provides the opportunity to gain practical experience working in a nursery kitchen while helping prepare healthy, balanced and nutritious meals and snacks for children from birth to 5 years. The role focuses on supporting the Nursery Cook and developing an understanding of early years nutrition, food preparation and safe kitchen practices.

Apprentices will develop practical cooking skills while learning how to prepare a variety of foods, follow recipes and specifications, and cater for individual dietary requirements and allergies. The role also involves monitoring food temperatures, maintaining food hygiene records, keeping the kitchen clean and organised, using kitchen equipment safely, managing food storage and stock, and working effectively as part of a team.

The apprenticeship is suited to someone who is interested in cooking, enjoys working as part of a team, has good attention to detail and is committed to maintaining high standards of hygiene and cleanliness. Alongside practical workplace experience, apprentices will complete the Level 2 Production Chef qualification with Luminate Education Group and attend Leeds City College one day each week. A full-time permanent contract is highly likely after successful completion.

Training to be Delivered

• Develop practical cooking skills by preparing fresh and frozen meat, fish, poultry, fruit, vegetables and salads to the required standards.
• Learn different cooking methods, including steaming, boiling, baking, grilling, frying, braising, stewing and poaching.
• Develop knowledge of food hygiene, safe food preparation, storage, temperature control, allergens and maintaining a clean and safe kitchen environment.
• Learn how to follow recipes and specifications to produce, portion and present food while meeting individual dietary requirements.
• Develop skills in stock control, food storage and rotation, portion control and reducing food waste.
• Learn how to safely use and maintain manual and electrical food preparation equipment and kitchen tools.
• Develop professional skills in teamwork, communication, time management, problem-solving and responding to feedback.
• Complete a nationally recognised Level 2 Production Chef qualification alongside practical workplace experience.
