About the role

Salary: £12.71 per hour
Job Type: Part-time (22–30 hours per week)

About the Practice

An established, independent small animal veterinary practice in South Devon is looking to recruit a Veterinary Receptionist to join its friendly and supportive team.

The practice is RCVS-accredited, treats a wide variety of small animals and exotic species, is recognised for its commitment to rabbit welfare, and is an approved Veterinary Nurse Training Practice.

This is an excellent opportunity for an organised, compassionate individual who enjoys delivering outstanding customer service while helping to support exceptional patient care.

The Role

As the first point of contact for clients, suppliers and visitors, you'll play a vital role in creating a welcoming and professional environment while ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the reception team.

Working closely with both clinical and administrative colleagues, you'll combine excellent customer service with strong organisational skills, supporting clients through everything from routine appointments to more emotional situations with empathy and professionalism.

Travel between branch practices may occasionally be required, so a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Welcome clients and their pets to the practice

  • Act as the first point of contact for clients, suppliers and visitors

  • Answer telephone calls, book appointments and respond to enquiries

  • Recognise and escalate medical emergencies promptly to the clinical team

  • Register new clients and maintain accurate patient records

  • Obtain and manage patient histories from other veterinary practices

  • Scan and upload documentation to the practice management system

  • Process payments, issue invoices and assist with insurance claims

  • Provide general information on preventative healthcare products

  • Dispense authorised repeat prescriptions

  • Maintain reception retail displays

  • Support clients with empathy during sensitive situations

  • Ensure confidentiality in accordance with GDPR and RCVS guidelines

  • Keep reception and waiting areas clean, tidy and welcoming

  • Complete end-of-day cashing up and reconcile financial records

What's on Offer

  • Part-time role (22–30 hours per week)

  • Additional hours available to cover holidays and sickness

  • Reception hours worked across weekdays and a shared Saturday morning rota

  • Career development opportunities

  • Generous CPD allowance and ongoing learning support

  • 4 weeks' annual leave plus bank holidays

  • Birthday leave

  • Company pension

  • Discounted veterinary treatment

  • Cycle to Work scheme

  • Free on-site parking

  • Employee Assistance Programme with wellbeing support

About You

The ideal candidate will have previous reception or administrative experience. Veterinary experience is welcomed but not essential.

You'll also be:

  • Friendly, organised and highly professional

  • Passionate about delivering exceptional customer service

  • A genuine animal lover with a commitment to pet welfare

  • Calm, patient and empathetic, particularly in emotional situations

  • An excellent communicator with strong attention to detail

  • Confident using computer systems and managing accurate records

  • Trustworthy and able to maintain confidentiality at all times

  • Flexible and willing to travel between branch practices when required

  • A full UK driving licence holder with access to a vehicle

If you're looking to join a supportive independent veterinary practice where you can make a real difference to both clients and their pets, we'd love to hear from you. Apply today to find out more about this exciting opportunity.
