Traffic Engineer Bexley

Job Purpose

The Traffic Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing and managing traffic engineering schemes that improve road safety, traffic flow, accessibility and the efficient operation of the highway network.

The role involves analysing traffic and transport issues, designing practical engineering solutions, supporting traffic management projects and providing technical advice to internal teams, contractors, consultants and other stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
Investigate traffic and highway-related problems and develop appropriate engineering solutions.
Design and implement traffic management schemes, including junction improvements, traffic calming, parking restrictions and road safety measures.
Prepare traffic engineering drawings, plans, specifications and technical reports.
Undertake traffic surveys and analyse traffic flow, speed, collision and other relevant data.
Assess the impact of proposed developments and highway changes on traffic movement and network capacity.
Support the design and implementation of pedestrian, cycling and accessibility improvements.
Develop and review traffic regulation orders and associated documentation where required.
Provide technical input into road safety schemes and collision investigation programmes.
Liaise with highways maintenance teams, planning officers, contractors, consultants and other stakeholders.
Respond to enquiries and complaints relating to traffic management, road safety, parking and highway operations.
Assist with public consultations and communicate proposed traffic schemes clearly to residents, businesses and elected representatives.
Monitor completed schemes and assess their effectiveness.
Ensure designs and recommendations comply with relevant legislation, standards, guidance and local policies.
Assist with project management, budgets, procurement and contractor management.
Prepare cost estimates and contribute to business cases and funding applications.
Maintain accurate technical records and project documentation.
Support the delivery of transport and highways improvement programmes.
Promote sustainable transport, road safety and efficient use of the highway network.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications and Experience
Relevant qualification in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Transport Planning or a related discipline.
Experience working in traffic engineering, highways or transport.
Knowledge of traffic management principles and highway design.
Experience analysing traffic and transport data.
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, plans and technical information.
Good understanding of relevant highway and traffic legislation, standards and guidance.
Experience working with consultants, contractors and other professional stakeholders.
Strong report-writing and communication skills.
Good organisational and project management skills.
Competent in Microsoft Office and relevant traffic/highway design software.
Desirable
Professional qualification or working towards professional membership of an appropriate engineering or transport institution.
Experience working within a local authority highways or transportation environment.
Knowledge of Traffic Regulation Orders and statutory consultation procedures.
Experience using AutoCAD or similar design software.
Experience with traffic modelling, GIS or transport assessment software.
Knowledge of road safety audit and collision investigation processes.
