About the role

The Opportunity

We are currently recruiting for a Quantity Surveyor to join the commercial team of an established specialist construction and engineering contractor based in Bristol.

The business delivers complex construction, refurbishment, installation and new-build projects across sectors including defence, energy and data centres, working with major UK and international clients.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Quantity Surveyor looking to take ownership of the commercial management of projects within a technically demanding environment, with opportunities for professional and career development.

The Role

As Quantity Surveyor, you will be responsible for the commercial management and contract administration of projects, either taking ownership of an individual project or supporting a larger project as part of a commercial team.

You will work closely with project managers, site teams, clients, subcontractors and suppliers to ensure projects achieve their commercial, contractual and financial objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of commercial management and administration across assigned projects.
  • Manage project costs, value, forecasting and commercial reporting.
  • Prepare and maintain Cost Value Reconciliation (CVR) reports and cash forecasts.
  • Manage subcontractor and supplier accounts both commercially and contractually.
  • Procure subcontractors and suppliers in accordance with project requirements.
  • Review and negotiate subcontract orders and commercial agreements.
  • Measure, value and recover variations, changes and additional works.
  • Support the identification and management of commercial and contractual risks.
  • Ensure applications for payment and invoices are submitted accurately and on time.
  • Monitor expenditure against project budgets and agreed targets.
  • Maximise project value and identify opportunities to minimise costs.
  • Monitor subcontractor performance against programme and contractual requirements.
  • Attend pre-contract and supply chain meetings where required.
  • Liaise with clients, consultants, subcontractors and other stakeholders on commercial matters.
  • Support the project team with contractual and commercial advice.
  • Ensure project documentation and commercial records are maintained accurately.
  • Contribute to achieving project turnover, cash and margin targets.
  • Support the financial close-out of projects.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of commercial processes and procedures.
  • Build strong working relationships with clients and supply chain partners.
  • Support and develop the commercial awareness of other team members where appropriate.

About You

We are looking for a Quantity Surveyor with demonstrable site-based construction experience and a good understanding of commercial and contractual processes.

You should have:

  • Experience working on building or construction projects.
  • A good understanding of procurement practices and main/subcontract forms.
  • Experience with cost and value management and commercial reporting.
  • A working understanding of the principal forms of construction contracts.
  • Knowledge of key construction legal principles and dispute resolution processes.
  • Strong commercial awareness and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • The ability to build effective relationships with clients, subcontractors and internal stakeholders.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to work independently while also contributing effectively to a wider team.
  • Good organisational and time-management skills.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Qualifications

  • HNC, HND or Degree in Quantity Surveying, or equivalent apprenticeship route.
  • Working towards or holding RICS, CIOB or another relevant professional membership would be advantageous.
