Trade Counter Assistant / FLT Driver

Cogent Staffing are seeking a dependable and customer-oriented Trade Counter Assistant to join our client’s team based in Halifax, West Yorkshire. This is a hands-on, split-focused role that will initially involve 50% face-to-face customer interaction and stock handling, transitioning to a 100% customer-facing trade counter position once trained. The ideal candidate will hold a valid forklift truck licence (Counterbalance, Side Loader, or Combi Lift) and possess previous experience working in a customer-facing or trade counter environment. Above all, we are looking for the untrainable qualities: a strong work ethic, positive attitude, common sense, and complete reliability.

Shifts & Salary

• Pay Rate: £12.71 – £13.50 per hour DOE (dependent on experience)
• Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
• Working Hours: Monday to Friday, standard office hours
• Location: Halifax, West Yorkshire

Key Responsibilities

• Greet and assist trade customers at the counter, serving as the face of the business and providing helpful, professional customer service.
• Learn and master product ranges, pricing structures, and order processing workflows to transition into a full-time counter role.
• Operate forklift trucks (Counterbalance, Side Loader, or Combi Lift) safely to unload deliveries, move stock, and load customer vehicles.
• Handle customer enquiries face-to-face and over the phone, advising on product availability and taking accurate orders.
• Assist with stores duties, stock replenishment, inventory counts, and maintaining a clean, orderly trade counter environment.

Key Requirements

• Must hold at least one valid Forklift Truck (FLT) licence (Counterbalance, Side Loader, or Combi Lift).
• Prior experience working on a trade counter or in a face-to-face, customer-facing role.
• Excellent attitude, reliable work ethic, strong common sense, and high personal integrity.
• Good communication skills with a confident, approachable customer-service manner.
• Able to commute reliably to Halifax for standard Monday–Friday office hours.
