This role is based at Hackney New Primary School, part of Compass Eko Trust.

Join an ambitious school where every child is expected to achieve highly

At Hackney New Primary School, we are unapologetically ambitious for every child. We believe that background should never determine outcomes, and we are committed to ensuring that all pupils, including those with SEND, are supported to achieve highly and participate fully in school life.

We are looking for an experienced and committed teacher to become our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO). Working under the direction of the Headteacher, you will lead the strategic development and day-to-day operation of SEN policy and provision, provide professional guidance to colleagues and work closely with pupils, families and external agencies.

What makes this role different?

  • A strategic leadership role with responsibility for the quality and development of SEN provision across the school

  • The opportunity to combine whole-school SENCO leadership with direct teaching and learning within one of the school’s provisions

  • Close partnership working with staff, parents and carers, the local authority and a wide range of external professionals

  • A key role in developing staff practice through professional guidance, training, INSET and ongoing professional development conversations

  • A strong focus on using assessment, intervention evaluation, provision planning and resources effectively to improve outcomes for pupils with SEN or a disability

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the strategic development, implementation, monitoring and review of SEN policy and provision across the school

  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of the SEN policy, including maintaining an accurate SEND register and provision map and co-ordinating provision to meet individual pupils’ needs

  • Provide guidance to colleagues on the graduated approach, high-quality inclusive teaching and effective interventions, using assessment data to inform provision planning

  • Work closely with parents and carers, early years providers, other schools, educational psychologists, health and social care professionals, the local authority and other external agencies

  • Contribute to school development and statutory compliance, lead staff development and INSET, and lead and manage teaching assistants working with pupils with SEN or a disability

This is an opportunity to contribute to a Trust that is deliberate about how it improves practice and outcomes.

Compass Eko Trust is a family of 28 schools working as one system to improve outcomes for every child. We are united by a clear commitment: every child achieving, without exception.

Through a knowledge-rich curriculum, strong professional collaboration and a shared commitment to excellence, we support our schools to deliver high-quality education in their communities.

Our schools sit at the heart of everything we do. The Trust exists to bring clarity, consistency and support so leaders can focus on what matters most - teaching and learning.

Who we are looking for:

We are seeking an experienced teacher with the qualifications, knowledge and leadership skills to secure high-quality provision and strong outcomes for pupils with SEN or a disability.

This role is ideal for a teacher who:

  • Has Qualified Teacher Status, a degree and relevant teaching qualification, and holds the NPQ SENCO or is willing to complete it within 3 years of appointment

  • Has a minimum of 5 years’ teaching experience and strong experience of working closely with children with SEND

  • Has experience of working at a whole-school level, including self-evaluation and development planning, and of conducting training or leading INSET

  • Has sound knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice and a strong understanding of high-quality inclusive teaching and effective intervention strategies

  • Can plan and evaluate interventions, analyse data to inform provision, communicate effectively and build strong working relationships, including through influence and negotiation

  • Is committed to securing the best outcomes for pupils, equal opportunities, ongoing professional learning, confidentiality, safeguarding and equality, and can prioritise effectively under pressure

The SENCO will fulfil the responsibilities of a teacher as set out in the STPCD. This may include leading teaching and learning within one of the school’s provisions for 2.5 days per week.

As part of our Trust, you will be part of a professional community where:

  • Schools work together, sharing expertise and improving practice

  • Staff benefit from strong professional networks and collaboration across schools

  • Development is supported through coaching, CPD and leadership pathways

  • You are not working in isolation - you are part of a wider system

Our offer:

  • Competitive pay and conditions aligned to national frameworks

  • Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) or Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS)

  • Access to a structured programme of professional development

  • Opportunities to work across schools and develop your career

  • Employee Assistance Programme with 24/7 confidential support

  • Access to staff benefits and discount schemes

  • Family-friendly policies and flexible working options where possible
