What type of things will I be working on?

On this 12-month industrial placement, starting September 2027, you will build a solid foundation in material analysis, identification, failure analysis, and selection while working alongside scientists, engineers, and technicians in a laboratory environment.

You will gain hands-on experience using a wide range of cutting-edge analytical equipment to identify, inspect, and analyse materials. This placement will give you the opportunity to work with advanced technologies such as:

  • Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM’s)
  • 2D and 3D Optical and Digital Microscopes
  • Surface analysis equipment (AFM, Talysurf, 3D optical profiler)
  • Spectrometers (Raman, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF))
  • Non-destructive testing
  • Polymers thermal characterisation equipment such as TGA and DSC
  • Testing techniques such as 2D X-ray and Industrial 3D X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT)
  • Destructive mechanical testing methods such as hardness, tensile and fatigue
  • Developing a full suite of metallographic preparation skills

Where will I be working?

This role is based out of one of our main sites near Wotton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire. As Renishaw sites are located in semi-rural areas, applicants must ensure they have reliable means of transport to reach the site, as public transportation options will be limited. Alternatively, applicants should be willing to relocate to the local area.

What do I need?

We’re looking for students who are currently undertaking a relevant degree such as Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Biomedical Materials or Materials Chemistry.

Training and development is excellent so candidates with no experience but a keen interest in engineering will be strongly considered. If you are excited about the role but feel as though you don’t meet all the requirements, we would encourage you still to apply.
