If you’re organised, proactive and motivated by work that contributes to a well‑managed and reliable service for residents, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.
About us
Buckinghamshire Council is a relatively new organisation that combines the strengths and expertise of the previous five councils in the county to create positive change for local people, communities, and businesses. We are firmly focused on the future and have made a clear commitment to serve residents better and to provide stronger representation for Buckinghamshire, both locally and nationally.
Buckinghamshire Council’s Highways Services plays a vital role in supporting our communities, keeping the county moving and ensuring our transport network is safe, resilient and well‑managed. We’re ambitious, collaborative and committed to continuous improvement. Joining our Highways & Technical Services team means contributing to essential public services and working with a range of internal and external partners to deliver positive outcomes for residents, businesses and road users.
As part of our ambition to deliver the very best highways service for Buckinghamshire, we have recently reshaped our service, creating a stronger, more resilient and forward‑looking structure. This transformation reflects both local priorities and significant national developments in the sector. With new initiatives emerging, including the introduction of Lane Rental and wider changes to streetworks and network management, we are now investing in a range of new and exciting roles that will help us meet the needs of our communities today and into the future. These posts offer a genuine opportunity to shape how we manage and improve our network, drive innovation, and ensure we continue to deliver a high‑quality, safe and efficient highway
About the role
In this role, you’ll support the delivery of the Council’s Permit and Lane Rental Scheme and act as a key point of contact for enquiries relating to Streetworks. You’ll engage with a broad range of stakeholders, maintain accurate information, and support effective decision‑making within the team.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and support Streetworks activity in line with statutory and council requirements.
- Handle routine enquiries from utility companies, contractors, councillors and the public across phone, email and digital platforms.
- Manage Streetworks enquiries via the customer contact centre, FixMyStreet and Alloy.
- Respond to calls on the Council’s permit line and direct matters to the appropriate officer.
- Assist in investigating Streetworks issues and escalate potential non‑compliance.
- Research, collate and maintain accurate data and records to support team activities.
- Prepare reports, correspondence and documentation to agreed standards and timescales.
- Support communication and information sharing with internal and external stakeholders.
About you
You are a well‑organised and motivated individual with a strong interest in supporting the effective coordination of Streetworks activity across the highway network. You bring relevant experience that demonstrates your ability to work within structured processes, manage daily tasks efficiently and contribute to a regulatory service delivering statutory responsibilities.
You have good communication and interpersonal skills, enabling you to engage confidently with utilities, contractors, council colleagues, elected members and members of the public. You can explain information clearly, respond diplomatically to routine enquiries, and maintain a professional approach when handling customer queries or potential concerns.
You are comfortable working with data and digital systems, with the ability to research, analyse and present information accurately. You maintain precise records, draft clear written correspondence and follow established procedures to support decision‑making within the team. Your ICT skills, particularly in Microsoft applications, help you manage information effectively and produce high‑quality work.
You demonstrate strong organisational skills and can prioritise your workload to meet daily and weekly deadlines in a busy regulatory environment. You are proactive in identifying issues, seeking guidance where needed, and supporting improvements in processes and service delivery.
