About the role
Join Syngenta’s Engineering team at Huddersfield Manufacturing Centre and take a central role in the safe, reliable operation of a complex electrical-distribution network. As an HV Technician, you will work across a large Top Tier COMAH manufacturing site, supporting the infrastructure that keeps critical production and non-production assets supplied and operational. This is a technically broad, site-based role with no travel requirement, offering the opportunity to apply and deepen your high-voltage expertise in a stable environment. You will join a collaborative engineering community where safety, sound judgement and continuous improvement are fundamental to how we work. Job description As an HV Technician, you will report to the Electrical Supervisor/Planner and work closely with the Services and ETP Maintenance Engineer and the HMC Responsible Electrical Engineer. You will manage, operate, maintain, test and fault-find on electrical-distribution assets across the Huddersfield site, including 33 kV, 11 kV, 3.3 kV and 415 V systems. The role carries significant responsibility for the safe continuity of electrical supply. Acting as a Senior Authorised Person, you will ensure that work and operational activity comply fully with the Electrical Distribution Safety Rules, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, site HSEQ requirements and COMAH controls. You will balance planned maintenance, operational needs and customer requirements, including making calm, well-informed decisions during complex or emergency switching activity. Key responsibilities include: Act as a Senior Authorised Person and prepare, execute and control switching programmes for planned, operational and emergency work. Maintain, inspect, test and fault-find on HV/LV distribution systems, including switchgear, protection relays, transformers, HV motors, battery tripping systems, cables and associated equipment. Plan and coordinate planned and preventative maintenance, ensuring activity is completed safely, effectively and in line with maintenance plans and compliance requirements. Issue and control electrical safety documentation, oversee safe isolation and ensure accurate, audit-ready network, switching, asset and KPI records are maintained. Work closely with Operations, asset teams, planners, external service providers and contractors to protect continuity of supply and drive improvements in electrical reliability. You will also contribute to weekly planning and regular electrical-distribution meetings, support engineering compliance and continuous-improvement activity, and help develop the competence of Grade 8 Service Technicians, apprentices and third-party contractors. What we are looking for You are a safety-led electrical professional with practical experience of electrical-distribution systems. You may already be an experienced HV Technician, or a competent LV Electrician with the technical foundation, safety mindset and ambition to develop into an HV role. You combine strong technical knowledge with a methodical approach to planning, documentation and risk management. You can work independently, communicate confidently with a wide range of stakeholders and remain composed when operational pressure is high. You will bring: At least three to five years’ experience working with HV electrical-distribution systems and protection maintenance or strong relevant LV electrical-maintenance experience with the potential to develop into an HV role. A minimum NVQ Level 3, or equivalent electrical qualification, together with SAP/AP City & Guilds-accredited certification. Demonstrable experience of electrical-distribution networks up to 11 kV, including HV switchgear, protection relays, power transformers, tap changers, battery tripping systems and cables or a strong technical foundation in LV equipment Experience of preparing and carrying out HV switching programmes, ideally as an Authorised Person or Senior Authorised Person. Training and development can be provided if necessary. Strong knowledge of electrical safety, safe isolation, arc-flash controls, risk assessment and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. Experience of planned and preventative maintenance systems, accurate technical reporting and maintaining compliance records. Confidence using computers, tablets, engineering software and CMMS systems. You will stand out through your ability to coordinate work effectively with customers and contractors, diagnose faults systematically, and take ownership of maintaining a safe and resilient electrical network.
