About the Role

Under the general direction of the Teaching Laboratories Manager, the Chemistry Teaching Technician will work alongside the Senior Chemistry Teaching Associate and our academic staff to provide an exemplary technical support service to our students. The postholder will assist in the day-to-day support of the Chemistry Teaching Laboratories and in the preparation, setting up and day-to-day running of practical classes in the field of Chemistry. The postholder will supporting the Teaching Laboratories Manager and Senior Teaching Associate in the development of high-quality undergraduate chemistry programmes by providing technical advice to academic staff and provide advice, training and trouble-shooting services to all users of the chemistry teaching laboratories.

About You

The postholder will have a BSc degree in Chemistry/a related Chemical Science or extensive work experience in a related laboratory technician role and relevant experience of laboratory-based teaching in higher or further education. Working knowledge of Health and Safety/COSHH regulations and an understanding of the implications of complying/not complying with health and safety and best practice is essential.

About the School

The School of Physical and Chemical Sciences (SPCS) at Queen Mary University of London is a large, multidisciplinary and research-intensive school within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. While it is built around the core disciplines of Physics, Astronomy, and Chemistry, it also incorporates data science, reflecting a growing emphasis on computational and data-driven approaches across science.

The School has a diverse and active community, with over 900 undergraduate students, more than 100 postgraduate taught students, around 115 postgraduate researchers, and approximately 150 academic and professional staff. It fosters a highly collaborative culture, working across faculties and with industry partners and external stakeholders.

SPCS is primarily based at the Mile End campus, with facilities in the G.O. Jones and J. Priestley buildings that include advanced laboratories, workshops, and shared study and social spaces. Teaching is also delivered at the London City Institute of Technology and internationally in partnership with Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) in Hainan, China.
