The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Locum Consultant in Acute Medicine to support a well-established Acute Medical Service in the South West of England.

This opportunity offers a full-time locum contract within a busy and dynamic acute hospital environment. It is ideally suited to experienced Consultants who are confident managing acutely unwell patients, leading multidisciplinary teams, and delivering high-quality care within fast-paced Acute Medical Units.

You will play a key leadership role within the department, providing expert clinical decision-making for patients presenting with a wide range of acute medical conditions while supporting patient flow, admission avoidance, and safe discharge planning.

What You'll Be Doing

• Provide consultant-level leadership within an Acute Medicine department
• Assess, diagnose, and manage patients presenting with acute medical conditions
• Lead daily post-take ward rounds and Acute Medical Unit (AMU) reviews
• Make timely clinical decisions regarding admission, treatment, escalation, and discharge
• Manage a diverse caseload of patients with complex and high-acuity medical presentations
• Work closely with Emergency Department teams to facilitate effective patient pathways
• Collaborate with specialty teams, nursing staff, therapists, pharmacists, and community services
• Support ambulatory emergency care services and admission avoidance initiatives
• Lead multidisciplinary team meetings and clinical reviews
• Supervise junior doctors, specialty trainees, and wider medical teams
• Participate in teaching, training, audit, governance, and quality improvement activities
• Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation
• Uphold the highest standards of patient safety, professionalism, and clinical care

What We're Looking For

• Full GMC registration with licence to practise
• CCT in Acute Internal Medicine, General Internal Medicine, or equivalent qualification (CESR)
• Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register, or eligibility for inclusion
• Significant UK experience working at Consultant level within Acute Medicine
• Experience managing acutely unwell and complex medical patients within an NHS hospital setting
• Strong understanding of Acute Medical Unit pathways and ambulatory emergency care services
• Proven leadership and multidisciplinary team-working skills
• Excellent communication, organisational, and clinical decision-making abilities
• Commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care
• Valid Right to Work in the UK (no visa sponsorship available)
