About the role
Senior Embedded Software Test Engineer (Permanent)
Location: Birmingham (hybrid) - with travel to customer/test sites as needed

The role
Join a leading automotive & electrified powertrain organisation to own testing and validation of embedded software across inverter/motor control, BMS, and charging systems. You'll lead test activity from requirements through to bench/system validation, supporting safe, production-quality releases.
What you'll do
- Lead embedded software test delivery to programme timescales
- Define test strategy, plans and specifications; execute and report results
- Run bench / HIL / system integration testing and practical validation
- Debug issues, investigate defects, and support root-cause analysis
- Validate safety-related behaviour in line with ISO 26262
- Work closely with controls, hardware and systems teams, plus customers/suppliers
- Mentor junior engineers and drive good testing/documentation practice
What you'll need
- Strong experience in embedded software testing (OEM / Tier 1 / similar)
- Good knowledge of embedded C/C++ and firmware testing on bespoke hardware
- Test lifecycle experience (requirements → strategy → execution → reporting)
- Scripting / automation using Python (or similar)
- Working understanding of functional safety and ISO 26262
- Comfortable producing clear engineering documentation (test specs, reports, work instructions)
- Automotive networks & diagnostics: CAN/CAN-FD, UDS, OBD, J1939 (FlexRay beneficial)
- Confident communicator with internal and external stakeholders
- Engineering/Science degree (or equivalent experience)
Nice to have
- UML/SysML exposure; model-based tools (e.g., Simulink/TargetLink)
- Experience testing BMS, inverters, DC/DC, onboard chargers
- Automotive SPICE awareness; calibration/diagnostic tool experience
- Control systems understanding
