Quality Engineer

Our client, a leading organisation in the rail industry, is seeking a Quality Engineer for a temporary contract supporting an ETCS onboard unit (OBU) freight project. Based in Derby, East Midlands, the role will involve travelling to multiple supplier, fitment and installation locations to carry out quality inspections, audits and acceptance activities across rail vehicle retrofit and modification programmes.

Key Responsibilities:

• Inspect completed rail vehicle modifications to ensure they meet the required quality and safety standards
• Carry out in-process inspections, final locomotive snagging, asset inspections and First Article Inspections
• Oversee quality control activities with parts and equipment suppliers, including supplier visits
• Manage the unit acceptance process from handover to hand-back, confirming that vehicles are suitable for modification and meet the required installation standards
• Check installation and test documentation to ensure information is accurately recorded and compliant with applicable requirements
• Compile acceptance documentation packs and produce reports covering inspections, First Article Inspections and improvement opportunities
• Own and monitor snag lists, proposed resolutions and remedial works, including out-of-scope activities
• Carry out root cause analysis, identify corrective actions, share lessons learned and close or archive quality records

Job Requirements:

• Experience in quality engineering, quality inspection or a related mechanical engineering environment
• Proven experience in rail vehicle retrofit or modification projects
• Experience of working to industry quality and safety standards
• Minimum Level 3 apprenticeship in a recognised mechanical or electrical trade
• HNC in a relevant engineering discipline is desirable
• Experience of auditing, project mobilisation and implementing procedures or processes is desirable
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal teams, suppliers and customers
• Proactive, dependable and self-reliant approach, with a willingness to develop knowledge and seek information when required

Additional Requirements:

• Full UK driving licence and access to suitable transport
• Willingness to travel regularly between the Derby base office, installation sites, supplier facilities and other project locations
• Ability to demonstrate customer focus, innovative problem-solving and sound attention to detail
