Principal Building Services Engineer (Mechanical or Electrical)
Salary: £55,000 - £71,000 + benefits
Location: Birmingham

We are recruiting a Principal Building Services Engineer (Mechanical or Electrical) to join a leading infrastructure consultancy delivering complex projects across the UK’s public-sector, secure estates and operational environments.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced building-services professional to provide technical leadership across a growing portfolio of infrastructure and secure-building projects, including Ministry of Justice and government facilities. You will lead engineering delivery, provide technical guidance to project teams, and ensure safe, compliant and high-quality design solutions are delivered across multiple schemes.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of mechanical or electrical building-services designs across complex projects.
• Produce, review and approve calculations, drawings, specifications and technical documentation.
• Provide technical leadership, mentoring and support to engineers and technicians.
• Coordinate designs with architects, structural engineers, contractors, clients and other stakeholders.
• Manage technical quality, design assurance and delivery against programme requirements.
• Support project planning, resource management and commercial delivery.
• Attend design reviews, client meetings and technical discussions.
• Undertake site surveys, inspections and support delivery within live operational environments.
• Contribute to bids, proposals and wider business development activities.

About You
You will have:

• Significant experience in building-services engineering within a consultancy, contractor or multidisciplinary environment.
• A relevant Mechanical or Electrical Engineering qualification.
• Strong experience delivering designs, calculations, specifications and technical reports.
• Experience leading engineering packages and coordinating multidisciplinary projects.
• Strong knowledge of relevant industry standards, regulations and design practices.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage with clients and stakeholders.
• Experience mentoring engineers and supporting technical development.
• Chartered status or working towards professional registration.

Desirable Experience

Experience delivering projects within Ministry of Justice, secure estates, defence, healthcare or other operational environments would be highly advantageous.
You should understand the challenges of working within live environments, including stakeholder coordination, design assurance, refurbishment constraints and maintaining operational continuity.

Security clearance and Ministry of Justice vetting will be required.
