Refuge Playworker – Female

About the Role

Joneshouse Recruitment is recruiting on behalf of our client for a compassionate and enthusiastic Refuge Playworker to support children and families living within refuge accommodation in Alton.

The role focuses on providing safe, engaging and age-appropriate play opportunities for pre-school and school-age children who have experienced domestic abuse.

Through a combination of structured activities and free play, you will help children express themselves, build confidence and begin to process their experiences within a safe and supportive environment.

You will also work alongside mothers and other support professionals to promote positive family relationships and contribute to the wider support provided to families staying within the refuge.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver age-appropriate structured and free-play activities for children and young people living within the refuge.
• Provide crèche support during group sessions delivered within the refuge and community.
• Help create a safe, welcoming and supportive play environment.
• Support children and young people who have experienced domestic abuse and significant changes within their lives.
• Work alongside mothers to understand and respond to the individual needs of their children.
• Promote and support positive relationships between mothers and their children.
• Help organise and supervise children’s activities both within the refuge and in the community.
• Work alongside specialist support workers to contribute to individual support plans for women and children.
• Support and empower children and families to work towards identified goals.
• Recognise safeguarding and child protection concerns and report these appropriately.
• Support the effective day-to-day running of the playroom and children’s activities.
• Maintain accurate and timely records.
• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and client confidentiality.
• Work in accordance with relevant data protection, safeguarding and information-sharing requirements.

Essential Requirements

Applicants should have:

• Experience working with children and young people.
• Safeguarding Children Level 2, or willingness to work towards this.
• A good understanding of child protection and safeguarding.
• An understanding of confidentiality and appropriate information sharing.
• The ability to maintain clear professional boundaries.
• The confidence to work independently and use initiative when required.
• The ability to build positive and appropriate relationships with children, young people and families.
• The ability to work in partnership with children and young people and provide support based on their individual needs.
• A compassionate, non-judgemental and supportive approach.

Due to the nature of the service and the needs of those being supported, this position is open to female applicants only, as being female is considered a Genuine Occupational Requirement under Schedule 9, Paragraph 1 of the Equality Act 2010.
