Backend Developer

Overview We are seeking a Backend Software Developer to join a growing technology team focused on delivering innovative digital solutions that enhance operational efficiency and user experiences. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing and supporting scalable, cloud-based applications, with a strong focus on backend development, APIs and Azure technologies. This role offers the opportunity to work on modern cloud-native solutions while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software that meets business needs. Key Responsibilities Design, develop and maintain high-quality backend services using Azure cloud technologies. Develop and support RESTful APIs and services for web and mobile applications. Collaborate with business stakeholders, product teams and technical colleagues to gather requirements and deliver effective solutions. Design, develop and maintain SQL and NoSQL databases, ensuring efficient data storage, retrieval and performance. Build scalable, resilient and secure cloud-native applications using Azure services. Write clean, maintainable and efficient code, following established development standards and best practices. Develop and maintain automated unit tests to ensure application quality and reliability. Participate in peer code reviews and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives. Support and enhance CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes. Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues across development and production environments. Create and maintain technical documentation, including API specifications, design documentation and support materials. Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders to ensure solutions meet business objectives. Required Experience Professional software development experience, with a focus on web and cloud-based technologies. Proven experience building and deploying scalable web applications and backend services. Experience working with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS or GCP. Experience with containerisation technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes. Experience working within Agile software development environments. Technical Skills Essential Strong experience developing RESTful APIs and backend services. Strong understanding of microservices and service-oriented architectures. Experience with Azure services such as: Azure Functions Azure App Services Azure Service Bus Azure DevOps Azure SQL Experience with Git and collaborative development workflows. Experience with relational and non-relational databases, including SQL Server, MySQL, Azure SQL and NoSQL technologies. Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Desirable Experience with Infrastructure as Code and cloud automation tools. Familiarity with monitoring, logging and observability tools. Knowledge of security best practices for cloud-based applications. Personal Attributes Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills. Qualifications Degree, Diploma or equivalent qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline. Agile, Scrum, DevOps or Cloud certifications are advantageous but not essential.
