Zest4Talent is recruiting an experienced Ecology/Biodiversity Consultant for an established, award-winning sustainability consultancy in London.

This is an opportunity to join a growing Nature team and work across a varied portfolio of development and sustainability projects. The position offers a balanced mix of ecological fieldwork, technical assessments, report writing, project management and direct client contact.

The role would suit an ecology consultant who has developed a solid grounding within environmental or ecological consultancy and is now ready to take greater ownership of projects while continuing to receive support from an experienced multidisciplinary team.

The Ecology & Biodiversity Consultant Role

As an Ecology & Biodiversity Consultant, you will manage your own ecology projects and provide technical input into larger, more complex development schemes.

Your work will cover projects from initial ecological surveys and assessments through to planning, design and delivery. You will work closely with clients, design teams, planning consultants and other environmental specialists to provide practical, commercially focused ecological advice.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Undertaking Preliminary Ecological Appraisals independently on straightforward and moderately complex sites
• Completing UK Habitat Classification surveys
• Preparing Biodiversity Net Gain assessments and calculations
• Using the Statutory Biodiversity Metric
• Producing habitat plans and ecological mapping using QGIS
• Undertaking protected species surveys, including bat surveys
• Carrying out bat identification and call analysis
• Preparing BREEAM Ecology Credit Assessments
• Producing clear and accurate ecological reports and technical documentation
• Supporting Habitat Regulations Assessments and Ecological Impact Assessments where appropriate
• Managing ecology and biodiversity projects from initial instruction through to completion
• Providing ecological advice directly to clients and wider project teams
• Helping projects meet relevant planning, biodiversity and sustainability requirements

Ecology Consultant Experience Required

We would like to hear from candidates with professional experience in ecology consultancy who are comfortable balancing technical delivery with project and client responsibilities.

You should ideally have experience in:

• Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and ecological site assessments
• Biodiversity Net Gain and BNG calculations
• The Statutory Biodiversity Metric
• UKHab surveys and habitat identification
• QGIS mapping for ecology and biodiversity projects
• Protected species surveys
• Bat surveys, bat identification and call analysis
• BREEAM ecology assessments
• Ecological report writing
• Managing deadlines and working across several projects
• Communicating with clients, consultants and design teams

Additional experience in areas such as Ecological Impact Assessment, Habitat Regulations Assessment or another specialist ecology discipline would be beneficial.

Qualifications and Right to Work

You will ideally have:

• A degree in Ecology, Biology, Environmental Science or another relevant discipline
• A relevant master’s degree, although this is desirable rather than essential
• Associate membership of CIEEM, ISEP or another appropriate professional body
• Good knowledge of current UK ecology, biodiversity and planning requirements
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• The ability to manage your workload and make sound technical decisions
• The existing right to work in the UK
