About the role

Senior / Principal Geotechnical Engineer - Local Government (Gloucester)

Join a leading engineering and professional services consultancy where you can work on high-impact, community-focused projects, collaborate with experienced specialists, and develop your career in a supportive, inclusive environment.

About the role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior or Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join a Local Government delivery team supporting a county council professional services contract. Based in central Gloucester, you'll help deliver a growing programme of geotechnical, highways, bridges and infrastructure schemes across the county, with a strong emphasis on practical assessment, design and proportionate risk management.

You'll be part of an established team with excellent local knowledge, supported by a wider UK network of geotechnical specialists who provide additional resource and technical expertise.

The county's varied geology, topography and highway network creates recurring challenges including slopes, embankments, retaining structures, landslips and resilience issues. The 2026/27 financial year is a key period, with increased investment in the geotechnical programme in response to the frequency and impact of geotechnical events across the region.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead and contribute across all stages of geotechnical schemes: early advice, investigation planning, design, construction support and asset management
  • Act as technical lead on a range of geotechnical projects
  • Develop and procure ground investigations
  • Write and check technical deliverables (e.g., monitoring memos, desk studies, ground investigation reports)
  • Undertake and review design/assessment calculations (e.g., piling, soil nailing, shallow foundations, earthworks)
  • Review/check CDM documentation and support compliance
  • Support day-to-day project management and delivery
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers through coaching and technical training

What we're looking for:

  • A genuine interest in work that delivers visible benefits to local communities
  • Degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent qualification/experience)
  • Chartered Engineer (or working at a level equivalent, via a relevant professional institution)
  • Experience delivering Designer duties under CDM Regulations
  • Proven ability to work with clients to understand needs and deliver pragmatic, value-driven solutions
  • Confident communicator, able to influence and keep stakeholders informed

What's in it for you

Work-life balance & flexibility:

Hybrid working (typically up to two days per week from home)
Part-time and flexible working options
Option to purchase additional leave and flexibility around bank holidays

Inclusivity & belonging:

A welcoming culture that values different perspectives and supports people to bring their authentic selves to work
Employee networks and initiatives focused on inclusion and allyship

Health & wellbeing:

Wellbeing support programme
Virtual GP access
Reasonable workplace adjustments
Benefits platform including gym membership discounts and additional wellbeing support

Your development:

Ongoing training, mentoring and support towards continued professional development and chartership where relevant
