About the role

Content Designer - Public Sector

Location: Leeds - hybrid working, 3 days per week onsite (mandatory)
Contract: 6 months
Day Rate: Negotiable, dependent on experience
IR35: Inside IR35
Start: ASAP / subject to availability

We are looking for an experienced Content Designer to join a large-scale public sector programme on an initial 6-month contract.

You'll work as part of a multidisciplinary digital team, creating clear, accessible and user-centred content for complex digital services. You'll use evidence, user research and data to understand user needs and design content that helps people successfully navigate services and complete their goals.

This is a hands-on role requiring someone comfortable working within complex public sector environments and collaborating closely with user researchers, service designers, interaction designers, product managers and other delivery professionals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, create and iterate clear, accessible and user-centred content across digital services.

  • Use user research, analytics and other evidence to make informed content decisions.

  • Translate complex information, policy and processes into content that is easy for users to understand and act upon.

  • Map and understand user journeys to ensure content supports the end-to-end service experience.

  • Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary Agile teams.

  • Develop and maintain content patterns, standards and guidance.

  • Prototype and test content with users, iterating based on evidence and feedback.

  • Work effectively with stakeholders, challenging requirements where necessary to advocate for user needs.

  • Ensure content meets accessibility requirements and relevant public sector digital standards.

  • Contribute to content strategy and continuous improvement across the programme.

Skills & Experience

We're looking for candidates with:

  • Strong commercial experience as a Content Designer, ideally within government or the wider public sector.

  • Experience designing content for complex transactional or digital services.

  • Excellent understanding of user-centred design (UCD) principles.

  • Experience using user research and data to inform content decisions.

  • Strong knowledge of accessibility and inclusive design.

  • Experience working within multidisciplinary Agile delivery teams.

  • The ability to simplify complex, technical or policy-heavy information.

  • Strong stakeholder management skills and confidence working with senior stakeholders.

  • Experience working to GDS standards would be highly advantageous.

Working Arrangements

This is a hybrid position based in Leeds, with 3 days per week onsite mandatory and the remaining days working remotely. Candidates must therefore be able to regularly commute to Leeds.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a significant public sector transformation programme and contribute to the development of accessible, user-focused services.
