The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Locum Consultant in Care of the Elderly (Geriatric Medicine) to support a well-established Older Persons Medicine Service in Scotland.

This opportunity offers a full-time locum contract within a busy and supportive acute hospital environment. It is ideally suited to experienced Consultants who are passionate about delivering high-quality care for older adults and confident managing complex medical presentations, frailty, and multi-morbidity within a multidisciplinary setting.

You will play a key leadership role within the department, providing specialist medical input for older patients while working collaboratively with nursing teams, therapists, community services, and other hospital specialties to ensure the highest standards of patient care.

What You'll Be Doing

• Provide consultant-level leadership within a Care of the Elderly service
• Assess, diagnose, and manage older adults presenting with complex medical conditions
• Take responsibility for patients with frailty, dementia, delirium, falls, polypharmacy, and multi-morbidity
• Lead ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings, and clinical reviews
• Develop comprehensive treatment, rehabilitation, and discharge plans
• Work closely with nursing staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, social workers, and community healthcare teams
• Support admission avoidance initiatives and facilitate safe, timely discharge planning
• Contribute to frailty pathways and specialist older adult services
• Provide clinical supervision and support to junior doctors and wider multidisciplinary team members
• Participate in clinical governance, audit, teaching, and quality improvement activities
• Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation
• Uphold the highest standards of patient safety, dignity, and person-centred care

What We're Looking For

• Full GMC registration with licence to practise
• CCT in Geriatric Medicine, General Internal Medicine with a specialist interest in Care of the Elderly, or equivalent qualification (CESR)
• Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register, or eligibility for inclusion
• Significant UK experience working at Consultant level within Care of the Elderly or Geriatric Medicine
• Experience managing complex older adult patients within acute hospital settings
• Strong knowledge of frailty medicine, dementia care, delirium management, and rehabilitation pathways
• Excellent leadership, communication, and clinical decision-making skills
• Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary teams
• Commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care
• PVG clearance (or willingness to obtain) is essential
• Valid Right to Work in the UK
